Algebra, Geometry & Statistics Take 2 Karen Scarseth and Anne Barber

PROBLEM  Lincoln High School has a 2 credit math requirement with a.5 swing credit coming from either math, computers or science (we now have a 3 credit math requirement for incoming students).  We found we had a section of our population who were habitually failing Algebra I and/or Geometry and that section seemed to be getting larger.

SOLUTION  Around 2008, members of our department developed a class called Explorations in Algebra, Geometry and Statistics.  Originally, class was designed as a regular class using units from Algebra I and Geometry and some additional Statistics units.

In February 2012, due to a staffing need in our department, Anne and I each picked up a 2 nd semester section of Explorations. We soon found out the traditional ways of teaching to this clientele didn’t work

DEMOGRAPHICS  Started the year with 34 students. I now have 25.  Included in the 25 are 7 who did not start the year with me. 6 failed other classes 1 st semester and need to get a credit of math. 1 moved in.  Not counted in any of these numbers are the 4 students that moved in after the year started and have since moved away.  Additionally there have been numerous hospital stays, suspensions, etc

SOLUTION #2  In , the two of us were going to have all of the sections of Explorations. We decided that we wanted to make it a project-based class  The district was asking for volunteers to take a classroom set of laptops to pilot one-to-one programs. We wanted a classroom set of laptops for our Pre-Calculus classes so we signed up
