Using a separate sheet of paper divide three columns as followed: K – What you already know W – What you want to know L – What you have learned from this lesson. KWL Activity

WHMIS SYMBOLS Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

COMPRESSED GAS Contents are under pressure. Do NOT puncture or store it near a heat source Examples: -Propane Canisters -Oxygen Tanks -Aerosol Containers

FLAMMABLE & COMBUSTIBLE Contents will catch on fire if ignited. Keep away from flames Examples: -Gasoline -Butane -Aerosol Canisters

OXIDIZING MATERIAL Contain oxygen and increase the risk of fire. Examples: -Hydrogen Peroxide -Potassium Permanganate

POISONOUS & INFECTIOUS: ACUTE Can cause death if exposed to in small amounts. Examples: –Cyanide –Chlorine Gas

POISONOUS & INFECTIOUS: CHRONIC Can cause long term health effects. Examples: –Asbestos –Lead –Mercury

POISONOUS & INFECTIOUS: BIOHAZARD Variety of chemicals which can cause harm to person. Examples: -Medical Waste -Sewage -Decaying matter

CORROSIVE MATERIALS Can burn skin and eyes. Examples: -Bleach -Toilet bowl cleaners -Sulphuric Acid

REACTIVE MATERIALS Can react with water to form noxious gases. Examples: -Picric Acid -TNT

HHPS SYMBOLS

Rules to Follow in Lab Labs allow us to see practical results of what we are learning in class. They can be fun and very intellectually stimulating…

Or they can result in injury if the set rules are not followed!

REVIEW LAB SAFETY GUIDELINES - HANDOUT General, Chemical, Glassware, Clothing, Behaviour, Spills, Tubing, Centrifuge, Thermometer, Bunsen Burner, Emergency Equipment, Waste Tour the Science lab and get acquainted with the safety apparatuses located around the lab.

Find 3 – 5 different items in your household illustrating the various WHMIS and HHPS symbols. HOMEWORK
