THE CAUSES OF THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR Day One

ROOTS OF THE CONFLICT  Competition over North America

THE OHIO RIVER VALLEY  France claimed the territory west of the Ohio River.  The American Colonists wanted to expand into this territory  To keep out the Americans, the French created a series of forts to protect the land from the Americans.

GOVERNOR ROBERT DINWIDDIE Dinwiddie wants to secure the Ohio River Valley for the Virginia colony and England In order to do this, he needed a detailed map of the area He organized a scouting party to map the area and tell the French that England controlled the Ohio River Valley

GEORGE WASHINGTON  Washington was put in charge of the scouting party.  If Washington encountered the French his orders were to deliver a message to them.  He was not to fight the French

GOVERNOR’S PALACE

THE MASSACRE AT JUMONVILLE GLEN The Half KingJumonville

AFTERMATH  After the massacre, the French attacked Washington and captured him  They force Washington to sign a “confession” where he took the blame for the murder of Jumonville  Washington said that he had no idea what he was signing since it was in French  He says that the French were to blame, not him.
