Agriculture  Agriculture is either raring livestock and/or planting crops.  There are 2 type of agriculture, commercial agriculture and subsistence agriculture.  Commercial agriculture: Planting crops for business  Subsistence agriculture: Planting crops for self supply.

Slavery  In the past, immigrants were brought overseas to be sold as slaves for farming.  Slavery is no longer used now, in fact slavery is now illegal.  Slavery was very common around the 18 hundreds.  Slavery was not as critical or serious until there was “black” slavery which then led to people thinking of racial discrimination.

Workers usually live on plantation Strict separation of labor and management Two-class society—wealthy and the poor

Plantation agriculture  A commercial agricultural system  Also known as Cash crops  Usually sold overseas  Privately or government owned  Employs local workers  Also managed by global corporations  Needs a large labour force

Plantation agriculture  Found in tropical regions  Involve one or two main crops grown over a large area  Large plantations: -Produce more crops -An advantage for buying fertilizers and insect repellents -An advantage in organising research, processing and transport

Plantation agriculture  Played a key role in the economies of European settlements  Workers at that time was often poorly paid and sometimes they have to work and be treated like slaves  Slaves were the earliest workers for plantation farming
