49 In 49 In ternships Histology Lab Internship Program Program Name: Histology Core Internship Program Coordinator: Hans Snyder Target Audience: 11 th and 12 th grade high school students Number of Students: 2 per 8-week session Location: LSBC Histology Lab Brief Description: The goal of this program is to train students to create slides from five different tissues. Topics covered include cassette making and labeling, fixation, processing, embedding, cutting, staining and cover slipping.

49 In 16 S 16 S ummer Programs Program Name: Frontiers Women’s Leadership Academy: Setting your Future Directions Program Coordinator: Sue Sontgerath Program Instructor: Sharon Wulf Target Audience: Rising 11 th and 12 th grade students Location: WPI Brief Description: This program seeks to encourage young women to pursue studies and a career in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/ or management while providing them with the knowledge and tools to become successful in their chosen field.

49 In 16 S 15 P 15 After-School P rograms Program Name: Tech Girls Program Coordinator: Julia Sorcinelli Office of Multicultural Affairs Target Audience: 6 th to 8 th grade girls Number of Students: Location: WPI Day/Time: Wednesdays 4 – 6 P Brief Description: Tech Girls seeks to encourage girls to pursue studies and a career in the STEM fields by exposing them to different fields of science and engineering along with positive female role models. During each session, WPI students and faculty facilitate a wide variety of hands- on activities that promote creativity, problem solving, and teamwork.

49 In 16 S 15 P 53 I 53 WP I Visits Program Name: Engineering Ambassadors/Middle School Tours Program Coordinator: Lynn McElholm/Sue Sontgerath Target Audience: Middle school students (grades 6 – 8) Number of Students: Groups of 10 – 40 per session Location: WPI Day/Time: Wednesdays 9 – 12 AM Brief Description: Engineering ambassadors work to engage younger generations in the excitement of STEM fields while garnering key leadership, presentation, and project management skills for their own educational and professional development. As part of the middle school tour, the Engineering Ambassadors accomplish this by leading hands-on engineering design activities.

49 In 16 S 15 P 53 I 75 Re 75 Off-Site P Re sentations Presentation Name: Smart building, Smart bridge Presentation Author & Coordinator: Yeesock Kim Target Audience: Middle School Students Number of Students: 20 – 30 per session Location: local school classroom/community organization Brief Description: This hands-on, interactive presentation introduces students to the basic techniques and applications of force calculations, structural response analysis and structural damage mitigation. Students explore what a smart damper is used for, investigate how a smart infrastructure is built, see applications of physics concepts such as force, and gain exposure to concepts of structural vibration control.
