PEGASUS By: Claire Fendig

HOW WAS HE CREATED?  Pegasus was a result of ill- fated mating between Medusa and Poseidon. When Perseus beheaded Medusa, Pegasus sprang forth from the blood coming out of her neck.

TRIVIAL FACTS  Immortal  Winged horse  Stallion  Usually has a pure white coat, but can be black  Often referred to as Thunderbolt bearer of Zeus

SYMBOLISM  Symbols of Pegasus vary with time  During the Dark Ages he was known for wisdom  When the Renaissance came he was one symbol of poetry and creator of sources

CONSTELLATION OF PEGASUS  Zeus transformed him into the constellation of Pegasus and placed him upon the stars  In the constellation myths, Pegasus may have represented the blooming of spring  When this constellation rose, it marked the arrival of spring and seasonal rains  Located in the Northern Sky

MYTH  Bellerophon tamed Pegasus, and he rode him into the battle against the fire breathing Chimera. Later the hero attempted to ride Pegasus into the heavens. The gods caused him to buck. Bellerophon then fell back down to earth. However, Pegasus kept on going until he made it to Mount Olympus where he lived out the rest of his days in one of Zeus’ stables.

PEGASUS AND THE MUSES  After being taken by Athena, he was then brought to Mount Helicon where he was raised by the muses.  In his excitement for being given to those women, Pegasus was striking the side of the mountain with his hooves causing springs to turn into flowing fountains of inspiration.
