TITLE Exam preparation

Task 1 This is about understanding the key terms you will be asked about in the exam. If you know what they mean you can start getting easy marks. Task - Write the correct key term next to each meaning on the sheet

Task 2 – musical trends What do you understand by the word ‘trend’ e.g. As in a ‘trend’ in fashion or music Task 2a – In groups, come up with your own definition of what a ‘trend’ is. Come up with some examples of recent musical trends. Feed back your ideas to the rest of the class

Task 2 continued – musical trends Western classical music has also gone through a series of trends. Some of these trends lasted for many years before changing. We call these ‘Eras’. E.g. The ‘Baroque’ Era, the ‘Classical’ Era etc. For your exam it is a good idea to know the names of each era and when they occurred. Task – Put the musical eras into the correct order on the timeline, starting with the earliest.

Task 3 The Romantic Era The Romantic era of music lasted from about Task 3a – In groups, discuss why you think it might be called ‘Romantic’.

The Romantic Era (c ) An era reflecting an interest in ideas inspired by nature magic the supernatural mystery ‘Romantic’ music is concerned with expressing a intense feelings and emotions Music from this time often tells a story. E.g. “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” by Dukas

Task 4 - Listening Listen to this extract from ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ by Dukas. Task – While you are listening to the music write a couple of sentences about how the composer uses: 1. Tempo 2. Dynamics 3. Instruments

Task 6 Listening Listen to the following piece of Romantic Era piano music through carefully. We will be finding out about this piece and its composer in more detail next lesson. This is one of the set works that you will be answering questions about in your listening exam in May. What emotions do you think it portrays? What story do you think it might be telling? Can you identify any structure to the music? Think also about how the composer uses tempo, harmony and dynamics.
