Three parts of a detailed paragraph… HOOK Gives the purpose/key point of the whole paragraph Starts the paragraph with a bang! Remember: Write about literature in the present tense (He is, She is…)

BODY Supports topic sentence with three or more EXAMPLES Each example is explained/described using DETAILS Example = He is strong. Details = muscular, can lift his fifty kilo dog, can run a marathon)

BOOT Statement that goes back to your key point and “kicks” the reader out of the paragraph May extend thinking and answer the question “so what?”

Setting: (the lettuce) Time/Place Describe the time and place Tell how they are “hinged” to the events of the plot

Character: (the tomato) Describe the main character using as many of the six methods as possible (abc, rst) A = Appearance R = Reputation B= Behavior S = Setting C = Conversation T = Thoughts

Summary (the burger) Keep your opinion out of it Define the conflict clearly Describe two-three key events and show sequence of events by using transitional (time-related) words. (then, next, afterwards, finally…) End with a “teaser” to make the reader curious about the ending

Personal Opinion (the cheese) Rate your book out of five stars Give evidence from the story to support your opinion Evidence may include information about character, author’s style, conflict, setting, but should not repeat other information from the project Remember that THREE is a magic number in writing

Theme (the mayonnaise) Write ONE sentence that tells the overall message of the story What do you think the author wants the reader to know or feel after completing the book? Be sure the sentence is an opinion statement

Theme…continued Bad example: This book is about the struggle between good and evil. (too vague, does not indicate a message or belief) Good example: Even someone who has made terrible mistakes can redeem himself when he has a good friend to guide him.
