How To Write A Book Review

Book Review - Definition Book review - A critical analysis of a book based on content and style A book review is not the same as a book report.

Book Review Example – Part 1 Have you ever been so scared that you couldn’t leave your home? If so, you will enjoy the picture book “Scaredy Squirrel” by Melanie Watts. This book tells the story of a squirrel who is afraid to leave his nut tree. He is afraid of germs, green Martians, tarantulas, killer bees, and much more. Every day in the nut tree he follows the same routine, and he has an emergency kit so he is prepared for anything. Then, an emergency happens, and Scaredy Squirrel learns something new about himself.

Book Review Example – Part 2 This book is amusing because some of the things Scaredy Squirrel is afraid of will never happen. There are no sharks in the woods, and Martians do not exist. The author uses charts, lists, and timelines to show how Scaredy Squirrel organizes his life. These text features make the book interesting to read. The message of the story is that if we are too afraid, we might miss out on things and it’s important to take risks sometimes. I would recommend this book for readers from ages 4 to 9, because it is very funny, and kids will understand Scaredy Squirrel’s fears.

Parts of a Book Review Introduction - Hook the reader with a question or a catchy phrase. Make a strong statement. Summary of the book - two or three sentences Evaluation - what was done well, what was not done well Recommendation
