Key principles relating to appointing staff to the new structure A common approach will be used for all appointments to the new College structure; The move to new structures will be as “light touch” as practicable, particularly for staff currently based in the Business School and the College of Engineering, Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CEMPS); Due regard will be had to University equality policies in matching and appointing staff to posts within the new structure; Job descriptions will be developed for all roles within the new College structures using a standard template. These posts will all be graded using the HERA job evaluation scheme or matched to posts that have already been graded using these arrangements.

Appointing staff to the new structure Any offer of a post that is made to a member of staff will normally: Be within the current capabilities of the member of staff; Have (where possible) similar duties and responsibilities to his or her current role; and Attract an equivalent package of terms and conditions of employment. Where a member of staff has a temporary change to a substantive contract (i.e. change to hours, additional payment, etc) he or she should expect only to be matched to a post that matches the pay and terms and conditions associated with his or her permanent appointment (i.e. substantive post).

Stage 1 Where it is identified that there is a unique match between an existing role in terms of duties, responsibilities and terms and conditions within one of the Schools and a new post in the College structure, then that person will be matched (i.e. appointed without the need for an interview or other selection process) to the post in the new College structure.

Stage 2 Where no unique match between one individual and a new post in the structure can be made, then the posts within the structure for which each member of staff can express an interest in applying for will be identified and “ring –fenced” to them (i.e. individuals will receive priority consideration for these posts ahead of other staff). Where there is more than one member of eligible staff for a post within the ring fence, then such a post will be subject to a restricted competition process. Following an interview, the panel will offer the post to the individual who most closely matches the requirements of the post(s) for which they have been interviewed. All offers will be to open-ended posts unless otherwise stated on the job description.

Stage 3 Where no matching to an equivalent post can be completed, as defined in Stage 1, or where a member of staff has been unsuccessful in a restricted competition, as defined in Stage 2, the member of staff will be considered for other relevant vacant posts in the University. If no other relevant vacant post is available, an individual may be offered a lower graded post.
