Introduction You can make equations that are like chemical equations for things in everyday life. These equations are called everyday equations. In an everyday equation there are two sides; one side having the parts needed and the other side is the specific outcome.
o A word equation for the manufacture of everyday objects. o Has two sides of the equation: reactants and product. o A reactant is a starting substance in a reaction. o A product is a substance formed in a reaction.
o Sandwich o Bike o Lemonade o Basketball team o Skateboard o Cheeseburger o Flag
o An unbalanced equation is when the reactants don’t indicate the numbers needed to produce the product. ++ = B + P + J = B 2 PJ This is unbalanced because there’s two pieces of bread in the product but one piece of bread in the reactant.
Complete these unbalanced equations for each item… A basketball team- Center + Forward + Guard = Team ___ + ___ + ___ = CF 2 G 2 A tricycle- Frame + Wheel + Seat + Pedal = Tricycle ___ + ___ +___ + ___ = FW 3 SP 2 C + F + G = CF 2 G 2 F + W + S + P = FW 3 SP 2
o Balanced equations are like unbalanced equations, except there are coefficients in front of the reactants to show how many are needed for the product.
A Skateboard – 4 wheels + 2 trucks + 1 deck = skateboard ___ + ___ + ___ = W 4 T 2 D Lemonade – 2 lemons + 2 sugar + 1 water = glass of lemonade ___ + ___ + ___ = L 2 S 2 W 4W + 2T + D = W 4 T 2 D 2L + 2S + W = L 2 S 2 W
Homework…. Write a balanced equation for making a car, using F for frame, B for body, and W for wheels. TIP-when making an equation make sure that the number of reactants is equal to the number in the product.
