The Progressive Period was a time of political, social and economic change in the United States Muckrakers – writers who wrote stories exposing abuse in government and big business- this term was given to them by Theodore Roosevelt

Chapter 17 Sect Lincoln Steffens exposed political corruption in St. Louis and other cities 2. Ida Tarbell revealed the abuses of the Standard Oil Trust

Chapter 17 Sect Upton Sinclair published a novel called The Jungle in The book horrified readers as it uncovered the truth about the U.S. meat packing industry. The impact helped lead to the creation of the federal meat inspection program. 4. Ida B. Wells a former teacher, who wrote newspaper articles on lynching to try to promote anti-lynching laws.

Chapter 17 Sect. 4 Other Progressive Reformers 1. Jacob Riis an immigrant from Denmark wrote books like How the Other Half Lives that exposed the horrible conditions under which immigrants worked and lived. His work contributed to New York passing its first laws aimed at improving tenements.

Chapter 17 Sect Jane Addams (the mother of social work) opened Hull House as a settlement house in Chicago. Settlement houses were houses established in poor neighborhoods where social activists would live and from which they would offer assistance to immigrants and under privileged citizens.

Chapter 17 Sect. 4 Temperance Movement – originally wanted to limit and eventually advocate eliminating alcohol. Carrie Nation – major leader of the Temperance Movement. In 1919 the eighteenth amendment was ratified. It prohibited the making, selling or transporting of any alcoholic beverage in the nation.

Chapter 17 Sect. 4 National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA)- led by Susan B. Anthony attempted to win a constitutional amendment granting women the right to vote. In 1919 Congress passed the nineteenth amendment allowing women the right to vote.

Chapter 17 Sect. 4 In 1881 Garfield was assassinated by a man who was upset because he did not get the political position he wanted. His death led to the passage of the Pendleton Act- sought to ensure that future appointments would be based on an individuals merit rather than his political loyalties. The Pendleton Act established the Civil Service Act that required applicants to pass a civil service exam prior to being considered for any official position.
