Atomic Structure Ms. Millimet August 19, 2014

Entrance Procedure – Reminder!  Walk in classroom silently  Pick up papers that you need from side table then walk to your seat (Keep walking forward, do not turn around)  Check board and Sit down at your desk. 1. Write down homework in your planner. 2. Take out have-outs: Science Stud Buddy (Binder), papers for class, pen/pencil 3. Put homework in the top of the table from last night 4. Start DO First  5 minutes to work on do first, silently and independently  On top of your guided notes!

Objectives  SWBAT explain the location, masses and charges of protons, electrons, and neutrons.  SWBAT compare and contrast the nucleus with the electron cloud.  WHY?  Atomic structure explains all of the materials and substances we have in the universe  Atomic structure is basis of chemistry and the rest of our unit!  Earn commended on STAAR and reach our growth goal on Cas!

Atomic Structure- Nonfiction Reading  Read through the passage in pairs.  Fill in the table below (use pencil in case you want to change answers!)  Note: Wait on Mass – Will learn as a class Subatomic Particle Electrical ChargeLocation Mass PositiveNegativeNeutral Inside nucleus? Outside nucleus Proton X Neutron Electron

 AMU = atomic mass unit = 1 proton or 1 neutron Subatomic Particle Electrical ChargeLocation Mass PositiveNegativeNeutral Inside nucleus? Outside nucleus Proton X X 1 AMU Neutron XX 1 AMU Electron X X Nearly 0 (1/1836 AMU)

Atomic Mass (an atom’s mass) is calculated by…  Protons + Neutrons

So, how would we draw an atom?  Nucleus is in the center. Nucleus is very tiny and very dense.  Electrons orbit in the electron cloud. They are at different energy levels. Electron cloud is mostly empty space and is very large.

Check Yourself!  Which statement is NOT true? 1. A proton is positively charged and located in the nucleus 2. A electron is negatively charged and located in the electron cloud 3. A neutron is negatively charged and located in the nucleus?  Which statement(s) correctly compares the mass of 2 subatomic particles? 1. A proton has less mass than a neutron 2. A proton has less mass than an electron 3. A proton has more mass than a neutron 4. A proton has more mass than an electron 5. A proton has the same mass a neutron 6. A proton has the same mass as an electron

Guided Practice: Vocabulary Box: 1. Proton: Positively charged subatomic particle located in nucleus with a mass of 1 AMU 2. Neutron: Neutral subatomic particle located in nucleus. Has no charge and a mass of 1 AMU (Neural/ no charge, nucleus,) 3. Electron: Negatively charged subatomic particle located in the electron cloud with no mass. 4. Nucleus: Center of the atom. Contains nearly all the mass of atom. Very dense and contains protons and neutrons. 5. Atomic Mass: total mass of atom = # of protons plus # of neutrons 6. Atomic Mass Unit: same as one proton or one neutron Answer the questions on guided notes with your table group. Table Managers: Read question out loud, ask peers for ideas/answers/evidence! Stop when you get to “Try On Your Own.”

Guided Practice Answers:  1. What is an atom? A tiny particle that makes up all matter  2. What are the two main regions of an atom? The nucleus (center) and the electron cloud  3. Which subatomic particles are found in the nucleus? Protons and Neutrons  4. Which subatomic particles fly around in clouds? Electrons  5. Which subatomic particle has no electrical charge? Neutrons  6. Which subatomic particle has a positive charge? Protons  7. Which subatomic particle has a negative charge? Electrons  8. Which part of the atom has the most mass: the nucleus or the cloud? Nucleus  9. Which is the only particle not found in the nucleus? Electrons  10. Which has more mass: 2 electrons, 1 electron and 1 proton, or 2 protons? 2 protons has the most mass (2 AMU). Note: 2 electrons = 0 AMU and 1 proton and 1 electron has mass of 1 AMU

Guided Practice Answers:  1. Which part of diagram represents the entire nucleus of the atom? A. B. C. D. E.  2. Which part of the diagram represents the neutrons in an atom? A. B. C. D. E.  3. Which part of the diagram represents the particle with the least mass? A. B. C. D. E.  4. Which part of the diagram represents the protons? A. B. C. D. E.  5. Which part of the diagram represents a negatively charged particle? E.  Note: D. is labeling 2 different energy levels or layers where electrons can be found.

Independent Practice  Complete the Try it On Your Own Questions on your guided notes  Work on Study Tool to help you memorize vocabulary and subatomic particles in atoms.  HOMEWORK: Complete the Study Tool and the Homework you picked up on your way into class  Exit Ticket with 8 minutes left  Take out red pen when you are done  Put notes and Study Tool in Science Study Buddy Binder
