General Background Afghan population depends to a large extent on: 1.Agriculture 2. Animal Husbandry

Pasture and grazing area for sheep and goats

Exotic breed Holstein Friesian cattle

Drinking water and grazing area for sheep and goats

Present situation and existing problems Afghanistan has 3 million hectare pasture More than 33 million different species of animals, total province is 32 (400 districts) Number of animals is not comparable with their production, low rate of growth and less production are due to: Incidence of different diseases Non-existence of enough animal clinics and diagnostic laboratories

Lack of well trained veterinarian Non-existence of vaccine and medicine production in the country Poor feeding management, breeding and selection Lack of proper coordination between the private and public sector

Veterinary and animal husbandry education system in Afghanistan Government  Veterinary schools  Veterinary institutes  Faculty of Veterinary science International Organization training center  FAO, training program  DCA, training center for Para veterinarian

Total veterinarian trained  950 about 50% is outside the country  From 475 veterinarian 25% left their professional jobs  Present we have about 356 veterinarian in the whole country  Beside this Para-veterinarian and basic veterinary workers trained by FAO and DCA
