The Curriculum  We are now following the new National Curriculum for Maths, English and Science.  The new curriculum in Y6 provides the children with many new challenges in all areas.

What’s been added to Maths? Compare and order fractions greater than 1 Long division 4 operations with fractions Calculate decimal equivalent of fractions Understand & use order of operations Plot points in all 4 quadrants Convert between miles and kilometres Name radius/diameter and know relationship Use formulae for area/volume of shapes Calculating area of triangles & parallelograms Calculating volume of 3D shapes Algebra Create and describe linear sequences Find solutions to unknowns in problems

What’s been added to English?  Continue to distinguish between homophones and other words which are often confused.  Assess the effectiveness of their own and others’ writing.  Ensure the consistent and correct use of tense throughout a piece of writing.  Using commas to clarify meaning or avoid ambiguity in writing.  Using semi colons or dashes to mark boundaries between independent clauses.

The Creative Curriculum  Autumn Term – World War 2  Spring Term - ‘Britain in the 1960s  Summer Term – Africa  English and different subjects are linked together to support the development of the children’s learning.  ICT is also used to develop the themes but we also include teaching Internet Safety and other relevant themes linking to the new curriculum.

Behaviour  We have high expectations of children in relation to following our rules and code of conduct, ‘It’s Good to Be Green’.  We would like your support in helping your child to take responsibility for their own behaviour.  We believe that it is vital for staff and parents to work together in ensuring a consistent approach to dealing with children's behaviour.

Presentation of Work  We will be encouraging all children to take great pride in their work.  All children will learn how to present their work and will be expected to maintain these standards throughout the year in all curriculum areas.  Homework should be presented as though it is a piece of class work.

Uniform  All children are expected to wear GPS uniform at all times, shirts tucked in, top buttons done up and ties are worn neatly.  Sensible black school shoes should be worn.  School PE kits with pumps (trainers for outdoor).  They should come in dressed in PE kit and school track suits on Wednesdays.

Please could children bring in art shirts or an apron.

New Year, New Expectations We have high expectations of all the children in Year 6 as the eldest members of our school especially with their:  Behaviour;  Presentation of Work;  Uniform;  P.E Kit;  Punctuality;  Homework;

Homework  Children will be given maths homework on a Friday once the topic they are covering is complete and return it on Monday where it will be marked together before moving onto a new topic.  They will be given weekly spellings which they will be tested on each Thursday.  English homework will be given out on a Monday and returned on Friday.  We trust that each child will read regularly at home and keep a regular reading record. (class readers)  We encourage you to support your child in completing their homework.  If your child finds something difficult, please make sure you let me know.

Other Educational Opportunities  There are many opportunities to learn outside the classroom, including class visits and after school clubs.  Currently, we are hoping to arrange a visit to Attingham Park in Shropshire to learn about life as an evacuee in WW2 after half term.

Reporting to Parents At GPS, we report to parents on a frequent basis:  Parents’ Evenings;  Newsletter;  Interim and full end of year reports;  Informal discussions before and after school.  By letter  Twitter

Thank You for Coming We really hope that your child enjoys their time in Year 6 and that they really achieve their best in class. We thank you for your support of your children in so many ways. THANK YOU for giving up your time to find out more about Year 6 and what we do at GPS!
