Functions The most important function is the production of saliva. The saliva produced prepares food before being digested. Saliva in the mouth helps prevent infections and fight bacteria.

Salivary Glands Parts The salivary glands are made up of 3 main parts: parotid gland, submandibular gland, and the sublingual gland. The parotid gland produces 25% of the saliva and is located near the temporal bone. The submandibular gland makes 70% of the saliva and is outside the oral cavity. The sublingual gland produces 5% of saliva and is located below the mouth.

Where Did the Food Come From and Where Did It Go Afterward? When you eat food the saliva helps break it down while you’re chewing. After you swallow the food goes down to the esophagus.

What Is It Made of? Saliva is made of: Water Electrolytes Mucus Enzymes

Diseases & Symptoms Common Diseases & Infections: Mumps Coxsackie viruses Echovirus When something blocks the salivary ducts, the saliva piles up in the glands and causes pain and swelling.
