‘Recreational’ Pitch Ryan, Roman and Duncan

Film Logline  ‘Recreational’ is a crime based thriller surrounding a young, off the rails type of lad, with no ambition, not many friends, doesn’t go to school and has no general idea of what he wants in life. This film follows the portrayal of this ‘chavy’, low life degenerate who lives at home with his Dad. It conveys a roller coaster ride of a transition from rags to riches he is fortunate to find a large bag of white powder (Cocaine) and begins to start dealing, yet he is unaware of the inevitable repercussions. Aspects of OTS- Our opening title sequence will introduce the main character by using a combination conceptual images and character representation to construct a vague yet interesting portrayal of storyline.

Characters (Main- Eli)  Main Character - protagonist - Elijah Jones/Eli – the character of Eli develops throughout the story from a docile young adult to a twisted drug abusing monster Like Leonardo DiCaprio in “Wolf Of Wall Street”. You follow his story as he progresses from a grey and depressed 19 year old, jobless, broke and trying to look after his ill dad, to a later deep and darker version of himself, twisted by the drugs and money. You watch his morals dissipate and the character you feel sorry for and connected to at the start, becomes heartless and corrupt.  Consequently, he develops a split personality. (As inspired by Ed Norton's character in fight club).  Appearance: Eli is young, he is only 19. He’s about 5’7” and he has short brown hair with a stubble. He starts off wearing a casual hoodie and trackies or jeans. Later on he is seen wearing an expensive suit to show his progression of his small drug empire.

Character (Sub- David, Drug mule) Secondary character - David Jones - David is Eli’s dad. He does not have an appearance until later in the story when he has a brief moment of sanity where he makes Eli question himself. He is confined to his living room. Once a role model father, he became ill after his wife and Eli’s mother died. He sits in his chair staring at his TV all day relying on Eli for everything. Appearance: David is a late 50’s man, he is old with grey hair. Shabby clothing always has a blank withdraw expression. Secondary character - Drug mule - A mysterious man who drops a packet of cocaine before Eli as he tries to escape the police. This man is the antagonist in the film and his purpose is to take revenge on Eli after his drugs are ‘stolen’ from him. Appearance - Early 20’s, shaved head with a fearsome look on his face. Hooded jacket and jeans.

Synopsis We are introduced to Eli in the first shot of the OTS. He is portrayed as a lonely teenager, being filmed in dark and dangerous places which reflects his solidarity. Eli will be situated in Brighton town where he will spend most of his time wandering around the streets, watching multiple drug deals taking place in dangerous areas. A series of wide shots will compose his loneliness, sitting on his own and walking on his own. A time lapse of Eli on the beach will be created to add an increased effect of isolation and also to vary the shots used. Conceptual images will be shown throughout the opening titles: money falling in slow motion will convey his greed, and create a better understanding of what the storyline consists of. We will also show a series of cuts which show small stacks of money being piled up slowly as the OTS progresses. Eli will then walk to a small alley where he will sit down to roll a cigarette to smoke. As soon as he has sparked it, a mysterious man will run past him, dropping a large envelope of some sort on the floor next to Eli. Eli will get up and pick up the package. An over the shoulder shot shows him looking inside to find it is full of cocaine. Police sirens will start to sound and Eli will quickly pocket the drugs and run. The final shot will be a low angle shot of Eli’s foot while he is running away in the background.

Mise-En-Scene In the Opening Title Sequence, the lighting will be fairly dark and the settings will be confined places in the streets of Brighton. This reflects Eli’s loneliness and personality and will create a shadowy atmosphere for the audience, increasing the anticipation. Settings we will use: - Laines in Brighton - Brighton Seafront - Brighton Town We will film Eli in wide shots to portray his isolation and close-ups of drug deals occurring to show Eli’s interest in selling drugs.

Props Our main character is obsessed with money and to show his greed, we will film £10 and £20 notes in close-up shots in slow motion. These conceptual shots will be very effective for the audience because it will show more variation in camera shots and will create a better understanding of the narrative. We will also use money for the drug deals that will take place which will give a greater idea as to what will be happening in the film. Being a smoker, Eli will be filmed smoking with close-up shots, portraying his companionless life. This gives greater detail into how he is letting life escape him and that he has nothing better to do than smoke his life away. Smoking is a negative image and that is exactly what we want in our OTS. The bag that Eli finds is used in the Opening Title Sequence. It is a brown envelope that is filled with (fake) cocaine and it is used to start off the narrative. One of our final shots will be Eli opening the bag which leaves the sequence on a cliff hanger. This builds great anticipation and encourages the audience to find out more about where the bag came from and what Eli is going to do with it.
