Welcome to Language in Society! A collaboration of Carpinteria High School and UCSB’s School Kids Investigating Language in Life and Society (SKILLS) Program

What to expect in this class To participate. To do college-level work. To do real research and make a new contribution to knowledge. To be an expert on some topics and not on others. To be respectful and respected.

What is linguistics? Linguistics is the scientific study of language Are any of the following sentences incorrect? We ain’t got no money. Money have any we don’t. We’ve no money. Linguists don’t judge language; we study how people actually use language. This is a social science class, not an English class!

Unit 1: The Linguistics of Slang Ask at least two of your friends if you can record them this week at lunch or before/after school, and have them ask their parents to sign a permission form Borrow one of our digital audio recorders and record ordinary talk for at least 30 and up to 60 minutes Goal: to create an online multimedia slang dictionary for the SKILLS project.
