Presentation transcript:

CS119 Unit 9 Seminar Adrienne D-Steverson Kaplan University When writing a final project or assessment of a course, you will want to focus on each of the components discussed during the course and apply good communication, writing, and critical thinking skills. During this seminar, we will discuss the "Case of Jane.” One of the connections important in this week’s reading material is the connection between each of the topics from this quarter; preparing final projects, earning a college degree, or learning any task are processes that require time and effort. If you were to take the time, and put in the effort, to create a thorough final project, or achieve a goal, then the results may be more positive than if you rushed through the exercise or goal seeking process.

Unit 9 Reminders: * Late Work Policy * Microsoft Word * Seminar Option 2 * Discussion Board Guidelines * Saving Documents * Communication with Instructor * Due Dates * Grades and Comments * Writing Center * Questions

Unit 9 Assignments: Read Discussion Board Questions Seminar Option 1 or 2 Final Project

Unit 9 Case Study: Jane retired from the military at thirty-five, and is currently enrolled in college to accomplish her life-long dream of earning her health care degree. During her run in the military, Jane prepared many statements and presentations for her supervisors. However, she never followed any particular writing protocol or process to prepare these presentations. She simply reviewed the information she was expected to prepare, wrote what she felt was right, and sent it on for review. Jane is now in Unit 9 of her first term with Kaplan, and she has used the same method for preparing her projects for her courses. For each of these projects, she has received various suggestions for improvement from her instructors, and she would like to implement those suggestions in her writing. Writing is something she enjoys and she writes well, but she has never had to focus on organizing her thoughts for a project for school. As a highly motivated individual, Jane would like to succeed in college, just as she did in the military, but she is not sure where to begin the process of preparing her final projects for school.

Questions about Case Study Considering her concerns regarding organization and clarity, what advice can you give Jane? Points to Ponder: 1. Jane already knows her ideas and statements are correct, but she knows that she needs to provide references to support her arguments. What method should she use for citing the works she used in her final project, and how should this method be used? 2. What type of information should Jane include in her final project for Academic Strategies? In other words, what type of information should typically be included in a final assessment of any course? 3. Jane is obviously anxious about her writing skills; what should she do to work through this anxiety regarding the final project?

Unit 9 Project Creating an Action Plan For the final project, you will create an Action Plan that focuses on goals (Unit 2), test- taking skills (Unit 4), time management (Unit 5), and stress management (Unit 6). This project incorporates the mini projects so that you can create one comprehensive action plan to use while you are at Kaplan. This plan can be reviewed and revised as you progress through your degree plan. Use the template accessible through the button above to complete your final project. Formatting Guidelines (based on APA guidelines): words (3-5 pages) Use double-spaced text Use Courier or Times New Roman font style Use 12 point font size Your paper should include the following: Title page including your name, date, course number and section Introductory paragraph Headings (see your reading “Components of Your Final Project.”) Concluding Paragraph Reference page (at least three sources)

Unit 9: Preparing Final Projects Internet Research Is the Internet a Good Place to Research? Make sure you are in the right place. Does this site address the topic you are researching? Was the page worth visiting? When in doubt, doubt. Do you have good reason to believe that the information on the site is accurate? Do authors provide any supportive evidence for their conclusions? Consider the source. Who are the authors of the Web page? What gives them their authority or expertise to write? Who is responsible for the site? Is this a commercial, governmental, personal, or academic Web site? Know what's happening. What is the purpose of the site? Is the main purpose to inform, to persuade, or to sell you something? Do you understand what is being said? What do you think has not been said that should be addressed? Look at details. Is the site well organized? Are there misspelled words or examples of poor grammar? Do the links work and are they evaluated or annotated? Do they send you beyond the site to other reliable sources of information? Does the site offer anything unique or does it tell you little more than you could find in an encyclopedia? Are the graphics on the page clear and helpful or distracting and confusing? Distinguish Web pages from pages found on the Web. Do you think this page was designed for the Web, or do you think it was originally something else? If it was originally something else, what something else was it? Henderson, John R. A Guide to Critical Thinking About What You See on the Web.
