NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR ADVANCED COMPUTATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE Computational Literacy NPACI Site Visit July 22, 1999 Gregory A. Moses EOT Thrust Leader

NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR ADVANCED COMPUTATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE The NPACI EOT thrust extends the excitement, benefits, and opportunities of computational science to a broad and diverse population. Computational Science and Engineering Non-traditional Research Communities Women and Minorities K-12 Students Undergraduate Students

NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR ADVANCED COMPUTATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE Education and Outreach Roadmap Goal: Develop human resources through innovative use of CS&E Human Resource Development National Inst. For Science Ed. LEAD Center Evaluations World Wide Web Learning Technologies CS&E in undergrad curriculum Access and inclusion of women and minorities Outreach to non-traditional communities Informal science Metric: Scalability

NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR ADVANCED COMPUTATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE Outcomes for five FY 99 projects Outreach to Social Science HPC software “hook” SDSU CS&E education center evaluation Overcoming barriers to curriculum change CRA-W and CDC mentoring Pyramid of mentoring Streaming video learning technology Being deployed in scaling of EOT Scaling of women and minorities program Four additional universities participating

NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR ADVANCED COMPUTATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE Imputation software ported to SP-2 for use by the social science community. Collaboration between social science and HPC researchers at the U. Michigan. Lack of useful software on HPC platforms is a barrier to the use of HPC by social scientists. HPC’s potential for social science research using such software will be demonstrated in subsequent workshops in FY 00 to achieve scaling of this outcome.

NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR ADVANCED COMPUTATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE HPC introduction in undergraduate curriculum at SDSU formally evaluated by LEAD Center for scaling potential. All common barriers to curriculum reform are present in HPC introduction to undergrads. Systemic approach is necessary for success. Targeted user-friendly HPC software is essential. Lessons learned will be directed toward Alpha Project EOT efforts in FY 00. PACI and CSU participation in NISE institute on learning technology in FY 00 to prepare for scaling.

NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR ADVANCED COMPUTATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE Fifty-five women and minorities mentored in CRA-W and CDC programs One-on-one program--faculty / student. Pyramid of mentoring offers opportunities for scaling of this activity. CRA-W and CDC leadership participated in 1999 All hands Meeting in San Diego to gain familiarity with PACI and EOT PACI leadership.

NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR ADVANCED COMPUTATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE Streaming video viewing and authoring tools deployed for scaling EOT and PACI projects through world wide web Beta version of eTEACH release in Oct 99 Content production is underway Rice’s women and minorities program Condor tutorial Undergraduate Computational Science course CS 310 at U. Wisconsin Content production and evaluation is focus in FY 00

NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR ADVANCED COMPUTATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE Rice’s successful women / minorities programs scaled to four universities- UNM, UIUC, SDSU, UW Rice’s K-12 teacher development workshops on CS&E and diversity issues attended by UNM, UIUC, and SDSU participants in preparation for adoption at their sites. Minority Graduate Education grant - Rice and U Wisconsin are partnering to transfer Rice’s minority recruitment and retention “technology” to Wisconsin.

NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR ADVANCED COMPUTATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE The SDSC offers a unique opportunity to touch thousands of school children with guided tours of the SDSC facilities

NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR ADVANCED COMPUTATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE SDSC will bring the science of two Alpha Projects to the K-16 community Brains to Bays visualization Neuroscience telemicroscopy Focus on useful HPC applications for undergrad and K-12 curriculum Mindful of lessons learned in curriculum reform Overcoming traditional curriculum reform barriers Overcoming particular barriers to HPC use
