Presentation transcript:

Jeff Martin, 1999

The first step to using the Internet is getting connected. People connect to the Internet in many ways. Most people at home use a dial-up connection using a phone line---they connect to Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) like AOL or Prodigy, or through the Lansing School District. Soon many people will connect using ASDL phone lines or through your cable---this will free up your phone line.

Jeff Martin, 1999 In this classroom we have a direct connection to the Internet---we don’t need to dial up. The Internet is always present in the background. The next step is to start a program that will allow us to access the Internet….. …..a web browser.

Jeff Martin, 1999 There are two main web browsers in use: and In this class we normally use Internet Explorer

Jeff Martin, 1999 When your browser starts it automatically goes to a start-up page---mine is set to You can change this start-up page.

Jeff Martin, 1999 Hotbot is a search engine. If you’re trying to find something on the Internet you use a search engine.

Jeff Martin, 1999 If you want information about MSU you’d type what you’re looking for in the search box---then click Search.

Jeff Martin, 1999 This is what HotBot gives for search results. You can see the first result here. To see the rest you’ll have to scroll down. Did you ever wonder how these webs sites are free?

Jeff Martin, 1999 Result number 9 looks pretty good. “Everything you ever wanted to know about MSU”! Click the hyperlink to go to that page. If there’s nothing good on this page you can click next to get more results…………..or……….

Jeff Martin, 1999 If none of these look good you can click the Back button to go back to the last web page you looked at. You can keep click back until you get the the first page you started at.

Jeff Martin, 1999 If you know the address of a particular web site you can type it right into the address bar. In the old days you had to type the whole address Nowadays you can usually type just weather.

Jeff Martin, 1999 If you find a web page that you like and think you’d like to come back to-- -you should bookmark it and add it to your favorites. Click Add to Favorites.

Jeff Martin, 1999 Click OK and this will be added to your favorites.

Jeff Martin, 1999 See……. Now MSU Department of Mathematics Home Page is now on your favorites. Anytime you want to access this page just go to favorites and click on the link. THE END!
