Prepositions Show _____________ between words in a sentence. Here are some common prepositions: aboutbehindduringoffto abovebelowexceptontowards acrossbeneathforontounder afterbesidefromoppositeunderneath againstbesidesinoutuntil alongbetweeninsideoutsideup amongbeyondintooverupon around asbutlikepastwith atbynearsincewithin beforedownofthroughwithout relationships

Concept 1 Prepositions affect the way a noun (__________, __________or ___________) or pronoun (________________) relates to other words in the sentence. Example: The parade passed __________________________ City Hall. Example: The scientist walked around the globe. Examples: _________________________________________________________ placeperson thingreplaces a noun

Compound prepositions: Prepositions consisting of more than ______ word. Here are some common compound prepositions: according toby means ofinstead of ahead ofin addition tonext to aside fromin back ofon account of as ofin front ofon top of because ofin place ofout of one

Example: The Earth receives light on account of the sun’s luminous glowing. Examples: ______________________________________________________

Concept 2 A preposition always ____________ a prepositional phrase. Prepositional phrase-Group of words that begins with a ______________ and ends with a noun or pronoun. Example: Huge dust storms blew across the rocky ground. Object of the preposition-The ___________ or ________________ following the preposition. Example: He walked down the hill. begins preposition nounpronoun

Some prepositional phrases contain only two words (the preposition and the object of the preposition). Example: Mars is scarred by craters. Others are longer because they contain modifiers (____________ another word, phrase, or element in the story). Example: Mars is scarred by massive craters. describe

Prepositions continued…

Concept 3 Adverbs and Infinitives When a word is used as a preposition it - __________ a prepositional phrase -____________ by the object of the preposition Example: The broken panel was outside the spacecraft. When a word is used as an adverb (modifies or adds detail to the verb) it – has no __________ of the preposition. Example: The astronauts slowly stepped outside.. begins followed object

When you see the preposition ______ followed by a verb, it is an infinitive, not a preposition and there is no prepositional ___________. Example: Melissa likes to go to the library. Example: Wherever Melissa goes, she always brings a book to read. to phrase

Concept 4 Conjunctions When you have a compound sentence, it is usually joined together by a conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). If but is being used as a ________________, then it is not acting as a preposition. Example: Suzie likes pizza, but her brother doesn’t. conjunction

Something to look out for: Sometimes you have two or more prepositional phrases next to each other, make sure to show that they are separate phrases: Example: The book was next to the pencil on top of his desk. If there are two prepositions next to each other in a sentence, the first one does not have a prepositional phrase. Example: The candy could cost up to a buck.
