An Introduction to Prepositions With sentences from Houghton Mifflin Text p

Think of a preposition as any word that describes the relationship between a caterpillar and an apple. In the picture below, all of the prepositions are underlined.

 Prepositions are words that show the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and some other word or element in the rest of the sentence.nounpronoun sentence  Wow! That’s a mouthful… visit the Grammar Revolution for prepositions to find out more!Grammar Revolution

 So you’ve seen some examples of prepositions. Watch this video to see more!  Now, write down as many prepositions as you can think of!

 Now for a little practice…  Choose a mystery object.  Choose a volunteer to step outside the room.  Now hide the object in some place in the room using a preposition (ex.- under a chair, inside a desk, etc.)

 When the volunteer reenters the room, s/he must ask questions using prepositions to try to determine the location of the mystery object. (ex- Is it beside a computer? Is it on a shelf? Is it on a desk? Is it on John’s desk?)  The volunteer has 20 questions to try to determine the location of the object.  The teacher will record all of the questions so that the class can find the prepositional phrases in the questions.  Good luck and have fun!

 Jen had never skated until last Tuesday.

 At first she wobbled on her new skates.

 Onto the fence, she clung.

 Then Sophia skated beside her.

 They moved around the rink together.

 Sometimes Jen glided across the rink.

 Other times, she stumbled ungracefully along the ice.
