Uses of Nouns- A review 1.As a subject of a sentence The teacher laughed hysterically. 2. As a Predicate Noun or Predicate Nominative (Remember you need a linking verb in the sentence to ‘link’ the subject to the predicate noun) My brother is the funniest kid in the class. 3. As an Appositive Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is a crowded city.

Uses of Nouns- A review 4. As the direct object of a verb Carlos locked the coach in the gym. 5. As an indirect object of a verb. (hint: must have a direct object to have an indirect object) Should I send David some money? (Watch Brainpop on this subject) (Let’s practice) 6. As the object of a preposition I found my book under the table. (Learn Preposition Song)

Uses of Nouns- A review 7. As an object of the complement. An object complement completes the meaning of the direct object- the sentence might not make sense by itself. My grandfather named his cat Peaches.

Uses of Nouns- A review 8. To show possession The boy’s hat is on the floor. (Remember- apostrophes are NOT used to make a noun plural)

Types of Nouns Common- desk Proper- McClure Middle School Concrete- the buzz of a bee, saltiness Abstract (ideas or emotions)- ideals, nationalism, friendship, hatred Compound- Merry-go-round, Middle Ages, hotdog Collective- a troupe of turkeys, a flock of sheep

Verbs Three types of verbs: action, linking and helping (Remember- a helping verb cannot stand alone. It must be used with another verb) Action: Michael jumped through the hoop and did a summersault. Linking: ( Most common linking verbs are froms of the verb ‘to be’) She was anxious and upset over her grades. Mr. Smith is a math teacher.

Verbs Other linking verbs are: Smell Something smells funny. Look Taste Feel Sally felt sick during class. Remain Turn Appear John appeared pale after having the flu. Become Sound Seem David seems quiet in class. Grow Stand

Verbs Helping verbs: (Let’s sing!) This is when the main verb is accompanied by a helping verb to create a verb phrase. I have watched Twilight over and over again. Have you read The Hunger Games? I will have completed my homework by 7:00 pm. Complete Paper on Verbs., pg. 17,18
