AFGHANISTAN CULTURE

WHAT IS CULTURE? Take a second to write down what your definition of the following terms?  Culture  Tradition  Religion  Customs  Family Turn and discuss with your groups what these words mean to you.

FAMILY Family is fundamental to Afghanistan culture.  Men and women's roles are much more defined along traditional lines.  Women are generally responsible for household duties, where as men will be the bread winners. In the cities professional women do exist.  Families commonly arrange marriages for their children. Factors such as tribe, status, network, and wealth are the major factors forming any choice.  Families traditionally live together in the same walled compound, known as the kala. When a son gets married he and his wife begin their married lives in a room under the same roof.  As with much of the Muslim world, the family is sacred and as such, is highly protected. As a result, probing about the family is not advised.

ARRANGED MARRIAGES An arranged marriage is when your parent decides at early age in a child’s life who they should marry. A formal contract is arranged by both the male and female child's parents on their marriage and all legalities such as dowry, living arrangements etc. As we watch the video focus on the following question listed on your worksheet: 1.How does the India view divorce? 2.How does the culture value girls (and specifically their death)? 3.What are some advantages to arranged marriages? 4.What are some disadvantages? 5.How did the two girls arranged marriages differ? 6.Why do you think the two girls situation was so different?

CULTURE IN AMERICA Our individual culture

MARRIAGE For homework: Tonight you are going to focus on one married couple in your family. You are going to interview them. Here are some questions you will be asking them, in addition you must ask 3 question revolving around we are currently learning. How did you guys meet? How long have you been married for? What is the key to a successful marriage? How would you have felt if your parents had arranged your marriage? What would you have done if this was crucial to your culture? How does your culture view marriage? How does your culture view divorce?

DO YOU THINK THAT CULTURE IS AFFECTED BY WHERE YOU LIVE? Write down what you think? Afterwards turn to an elbow partner and discuss your response and add on what evidence you have to defend your response. “Marriage or Else” ews/magazines/junior/pdfs/JUNIOR COVERSTORY.pdfhttp://teacher.scholastic.com/scholasticn ews/magazines/junior/pdfs/JUNIOR COVERSTORY.pdf
