The Story of The Melancholy Decimal

Once a upon a time there was a melancholy decimal. His melancholy story all started from his peers always calling him names. His real name is Mr. And, but that is not what others call him. < % Hey, Point I can’t believe you have less Facebook friends than %! Hey, Dot don’t you know that square’s are way more in style than circles. At least I have 100 friends. Hey Point, why are you always getting in the middle of things.

Mr. And lives right in the middle of Dollar Boulevard and Cents Lane. Mr. And gets along the most with the families who live at tenths and hundredths as they always remember his birthday. The families that live on Dollar Boulevard tend to forget he exists. Dollar Boulevard Cents Lane

Mr. And had the day off today so he decided to try and do some fun things to lift his spirits.

First Mr. And went to ACME to get some of his favorite snacks. He made his shopping list and when he got to the store he found out that each items cost the following: Shopping List Coke - $2 Brownie Mix- $1.60 Ice Cream - $4.55 Reese -.99¢

< ran into Mr. And at the grocery store and tried to make Mr. And get in trouble by telling him to a pay the wrong amount of money for his items. Shopping List Coke - $2 Brownie Mix- $1.60 Ice Cream - $4.55 Reese -.99¢ $2 $1.6 + $ $5.72 < Hey, Point let me calculate your bill for you.

$2 $1.6 + $ $5.72 < < who do you think I am? Do you really think I would fall for that. How could I buy something for $2, $4 and some change, plus other items and end up with a bill less than $6?

Mr. And always gets so upset when people forget to line up his decimals when they add numbers together. If you don’t you won’t add like pieces together. Mr. And even created a rap to help people remember, but no one listens to him anyways. $2.00 $1.60 +$4.55 $0.99 $9.14 You got to put the pennies with the pennies, the dimes with the dimes, and the dollars with the dollars. Or you got to put the hundredths with the hundredths, the tenths with the tenths, and the ones with the ones. HundredthsTenthsOnes

Mr. And decides he wants to go see a movie. Help Mr. And figure out how much he spent at the movies. First draw and use a place value chart. Money Spent Movie Ticket-$8.25 Soda -.89¢ Popcorn- $4 OnesTenthsHundredthsWork

Then Mr. And goes to the Mall. Mr. And’s favorite store in the mall is Abercrombie, even though he knows it is way too expensive. Help Mr. And figure out how much he spent. First draw and use a place value chart. Items Bought Sweater $45.50 Jeans - $62 Cologne Sample- $.99 Hat - $16.25 OnesTenthsHundredthsWork

Mr. And really hopes that you can brighten his day and turn him into the jubilant decimal instead of the melancholy decimal by being able to correctly add decimals. Make sure you do not get fooled like how < tried to trick Mr. And. Remember you got to put…your pennies with your pennies, your dimes with your dimes, and your dollars with your dollars. Or you got to put the hundredths with the hundredths, the tenths with the tenths, and the ones with the ones.

Now you try… Try to evaluate these problems: * 1 st set up a mini place value chart to help you, then show your work on the side. 1) ) ) OnesTenthsHundredths Work
