Presentation transcript:

OVERVIEW Our project is to build a safe efficient, renewable, money saving environment such as an orphanage in a location that is known for natural disasters. By using the green technology products such as the concrete, the stucco and other materials it not only helps improve our environment, it also aides in the health of those near or in the dwelling. Those of whom I speak of are mainly those who deals with or is susceptible to illnesses.

Translator (English) Local laborers Bags of concrete Tons of Sand Water Rebar Buckets for mixing concrete House copper wiring Plumbing Gallons of interior paint Gallons of exterior paint (such as stucco) Scaffolding Generators Fuel for the generators Concrete Mixers Air tools Common tools (such as hammers, nails, screws, screw guns, etc.) **Other miscellaneous items may include windows, doors, heat and air vents, and wood for porches. ** The home will be made from a concrete rectangular structure with a stucco exterior covering. The flooring will be made of concrete supported by rebar. The rebar will also be used in such cases as to add possible extra level. The roof will be made of concrete as well to form a dome like shape.

The building that we have chosen to build will be an Orphanage in Haiti that we are calling the recta-dome. After the recent disaster in Haiti the country is rebuilding and redesigning its infrastructure. There were many that died leaving many children without their parents to care for them. At this orphanage we will house the children and the workers that will care for them. This orphanage can house 52 people. I have made the bathroom large enough to accommodate those people. I have installed seven showers, sinks and 10 toilets. The only problem that I would still anticipate is shower time, which I planned for them to have a schedule that would alternate groups in different areas. With only 4000 sq. feet we were limited. We also have a nice kitchen area that will accommodate everyone in that shifting rotation. I think that this will be above standard living from what they may have been accustomed to. In my opinion this will be great living quarters.

First step in building, the structure, the masonries will grid the rebar in the rectangular shape for the flooring. Once the rectangular shape is gridded the rebar is then concreted and smoothed The air- form is then attached and inflated. Once again the rebar is applied for the walls and roof Once the rebar is ready the air form is deflated and concrete is again applied and smoothed. From this point the electrician /plumbers will come in. The two will work together as this will save time and money. Lastly the painting contractors will come in and finish the interior/exterior painting, interior/exterior designs (for porches, balconies etc.) Total time for Masonries would take approximately: 30 days Total time for Electricians would take approximately: 1 week Total time for Plumbers would take approximately: 1 Week Total Time for Contractor would take approximately: 2 weeks

In conclusion, we have learned that choosing an area that is not so populated with the items we take for granted was a challenge in itself. Haiti is obviously known for their natural disasters that can level homes, schools, medical offices etc. in no time therefore leaving nothing but devastation for the community. By choosing to build the recto-dome, we covered a dwelling that was safe for natural disaster. Without having the tools, machines and man-power readily available, we learned doing things by hand was the only option. For example to get the materials ready for the dwelling it was done by mixing the concretes by hand, digging the water trenches to assist in retrieving some type of geo-thermal energy to the community was dug by hand. In the end we learned the positives and negatives of the third world countries and their everyday struggles these people face. Using green building techniques and technology, we have enhanced the renewable sustainable resources of Haiti which will help assist the country in the growth and most of all prosperity for the people of Haiti.
