Agenda Questions, Concerns or Comments from last Week? BB issues? Submitting docs and discussion board? Field Trip!!! Demonstration Lesson #1 Reading Discussion (Science Labs) Introduction to the 5 E Lesson Plan Design Analyze Demo Lesson by 5 E’s

Workroom Field Trip UTeach has a lot of resources for you Beatriz, Agustin, and Vanessa will take us on a tour They will have lesson planning hours here – see BB course docs for schedule

Demo Lesson “Each lightsaber is as unique as the owner who made it” -Obi Wan Kenobi

Demo Lesson Take a look at one and talk to your partner: How does it work? What does it need to work? Can you build your own? How?

Your Challenge: Can you light the bulb? Wire = Battery = Bulb = Using only one of each Prepare a T chart Fold in half long way, unfold and then fold the top down about 2 inches. Trace the creases. Label LEFT half: Things that worked Label RIGHT half: Things that did NOT work Predict : -least one set up that you think will work - draw it as your first “Things that worked”

Here we Go! Jobs: (elementary modification, colored stickers or #’s to assign roles) Materials manager Recorder Both = engineers Using only ONE battery, one bulb and one wire, can you get the light bulb to light? Try your prediction first! As you work keep track of what you tried and draw a diagram of what worked and what didn’t!

Present your Findings Show us what you thought would work, tell us if it did and then explain why or why not. Present one other set up that worked and one that did not and explain what the difference is between the two.

Present your Findings Get in groups of 4 discuss Come up with one or two general rules that all the configurations that worked follow. Going further: Brain storm additional questions you would like to explore. GO AHEAD How many different ways can you come up with to light bulb? Clean Up: Repack your supplies and return. = Materials Manager

Claim: Many labs are too focused on procedure (pg 1)- what do you think??? Does this article relate to teaching math? How are teaching math and science similar/ different?

The 5 E’s (Based On Learning Cycles) 5 E Lesson Cycle 5 E Lesson Plan

How does our light bulb activity align? Talk to your partner/ table – write down your ideas Be prepared to share your ideas The 5E learning cycle
