Presentation transcript:

Track C on prevention issues Recognised Priority technical areas are ITNs, malaria in pregnancy, vector control, including use of DDT epidemics and complex emergencies

Going to scale with ITNs availability, affordability, promotion and dissemination mechanisms for delivery promotion of local production of nets long lasting treatment of nets Consequences of long-term use and other operational research issues, Among immediate recommendations intensified efforts to address :

Malaria in pregnancy: Support for immediate implementation of intermittent treatment; update country policy promotion of appropriate use of ITNs, collaboration with partners involved in safe- motherhood programme, develop mechanisms for moving intermittent treatment to home with involvement of TBAs and CHWs evidence-based use of appropiate drug for intermittent treatment

Vector control Better targetting of vector control interventions global monitoring of insecticide resistance, quality of insecticide, residual spraying in selected situations, promote the development of alternative insecticides, promote environmentaly-based interventions, incorporate health impact assessment for development projects, appropriate training of vector biologists,

DDT RBM to support countries to reduce their reliance on DDT while ensuring that effective malaria control is maintained

Epidemics and complex emergencies Promote development of field mechanisms for forecasting, prevention, early detection and control (including GIS, healthmap and meteorological data), Better networking within and between countries to improve preparedness plan of action,

Vaccines Promote the development of malaria vaccines,

Micronutrient supplementation Track results on micronutrient supplementation (e.g. zinc) and review results in the next partners meeting,

Capacity development Capacity development at all levels but focus on districts and communities, mechanisms for utilization, retention and motivation be addressed at all levels, Multisectoral involvement, innovative approaches needed for capacity development (distance learning, internet,…), production of appropriate training materials, special focus on the vector biologists

Technical support networks (TSN) TSN required at all levels (global, regional, country) with strong involvement of experts from endemic countries, Establishment based on needs, flexible, Explore additional ways for technical support, Cross linkages of websites should be encouraged,

Research Need for better collaboration between RBM, TDR, MIM and other research institutions, Better use of research networks at global, regional and country levels, Improving links between research and control communities.
