Environmental Awareness in the Trust SEPT - MANDATORY TRAINING Introduction Alongside the rest of society, the trust is facing a number of environmental challenges. How is the Trust addressing these issues?... By involving everyone. COURSE OBJECTIVES On completion of the Environmental Awareness in the Trust module, you will understand: Environmental issues the Trust faces; The approach the Trust is taking in addressing them. COURSE OBJECTIVES On completion of the Environmental Awareness in the Trust module, you will understand: Environmental issues the Trust faces; The approach the Trust is taking in addressing them. Initiatives A number of initiatives are underway to reduce the amount of waste that we generate. The ultimate aim being to reduce both our carbon footprint and the costs associated with consumption. ENVIROMENTAL IMPACT As a consumer of resources and a producer of waste, the Trust can have a significant impact on the environment. ENVIROMENTAL IMPACT As a consumer of resources and a producer of waste, the Trust can have a significant impact on the environment.
Measurements This impact can be measured in a number of ways, one of which is the amount of carbon within all processes. This is known as carbon foot printing and comprises of energy use; In buildings Travel & Transport Waste and Procurement. If you visit the Sustainable Development Unit website, you will see that the national reduction strategy is centred on these elements and it makes very interesting reading. SEPT's Board approved a sustainable Development Management Plan & Implementation Framework in February A year earlier the Board approved a 5 year carbon reduction plan. It is recommended that everyone familiarise themselves with the objectives and participate in the environmental stewardship that will secure lasting benefits. SEPT - MANDATORY TRAINING
Strategic Guidance There are various pieces of national guidance to help us to achieve a more environmentally friendly approach to our business. Most notably is the strategy called "Saving Carbon, Improving Health". Published by the DH, SDU (launched 2009) The aim of this strategy is to achieve an overall reduction of the carbon footprint of the NHS by 80% by the year This is an ambitious target, the Trust has teamed up with an organisation called the Carbon Trust that will assist us in achieving this. More information about the strategy can be viewed on the Sustainable Development Unit website. SEPT - MANDATORY TRAINING
Modernisation Programme As well as national targets for carbon reduction, the Trust is committed to providing a safe and pleasant environment for patients staff and visitors. The Runwell closure and modernisation programme is a good example of this aim Modernisation Programme As well as national targets for carbon reduction, the Trust is committed to providing a safe and pleasant environment for patients staff and visitors. The Runwell closure and modernisation programme is a good example of this aim Old Environments These are the types of environments that we need to move away from. New Environments These are the environments both internally and externally that we are aiming to provide across the Trust.
Environmental Research There is now very strong evidence to support the fact that pleasant environments are a positive influence both on the well being of staff and the rate of recovery of patients and service users. This has become a powerful force in driving the quality of the environments in which the Trust operates. Research carried out into the effects of sunshine on cardiac patients in a ward in Canada raises some startling points of interest to hospital designers. It was found that depressed patients in sunny rooms stayed an average of 2.6 days (15%) less than the others - Kathleen M Beauchemin PhD and Peter Hays MB FRCPC report. SEPT - MANDATORY TRAINING Natural Habitat In developing these new facilities we are also bound by various rules and regulations surrounding the ecology, and the protection of the natural habitat of many protected species bats, newts, and badgers. Use of the Bat Window for Rochford during demolition and construction.
SEPT - MANDATORY TRAINING Your Role You might think that as an individual, there is little you can do to make a difference but don’t be fooled. The trust employs nearly 6000 staff so if we all contribute, then the collective difference can be substantial. Switch off when you leave: Chargers Computers Lights Monitors Printers Photocopiers Scanners Ensure that external / unwanted lighting is switched off during the day. Imagine what could be achieved if every member of the NHS joined this initiative and made a small contribution to reducing our carbon footprint. Estate Services To help protect and maintain the environment, Estates Service employs a multi disciplinary team to achieve this: Use of Trade Specialists; Managed Projects from £500 to £27m; Energy Management £2m budget If you see anything that you feel needs attention or repair, phone the Estates Services Helpdesk to report it. Remember timely maintenance reduces costs, waste, and environmental impacts.
