Carolinas Originally land between VA. And Spanish Florida. Southern part is settled mainly by persons from Barbados (Sugar and Slaves)—Becomes South Carolina. They bring with them slaves and want to replicate the plantation system. Grow Rice and Indigo instead of Sugar. Church of England (Anglican).

North Carolina Settled by backcountry people from Virginia. Most are subsistence farmers. Can’t grow rice or indigo. Some grow tobacco. some Slaves. Anglican.

Georgia Founded by James Oglethorpe. To be for English debtors. Rules are strict: No slaves or alcohol. People are supposed to grow mulberry trees to make silk. Anglican.

What eventually happens in Georgia They see how rich people in S. Carolina are getting with slaves and growing rice they begin to do so as well. Copy South Carolina

Pennsylvania Founded by William Penn. Set up for Quakers (Society of Friends). Open to all religions. Cool to the Native Americans—buy land instead of take.

Ethnically diverse Besides English Quakers Also Germans (Duetsch) Scotch-Irish Penn gives friend a chunk of land that becomes Delaware.

New York Originally settled by the Dutch (New Netherlands). British capture and rename New York. Allow Dutch and Swedes to stay. Very ethnically diverse. Small part becomes colony of New Jersey.
