Presentation transcript:

Based on the topic you chose, who is your intended audience? Age group? Gender specific? Parents? Special interest group? What are some of the beliefs and ideals of that particular audience? Today you will need your proposal (turn in now), journal, Spring Board, highlighter and writing utensil.

Types of Arguments Definition Argument: A does/doesn’t fit B – Although some people wish to think of me as property, I am a woman. (Sojourner Truth in “Ain’t I A Woman?”) – The relationship depicted in Twilight accurately depicts an unhealthy, codependent relationship. Evaluation: A corroborates/refutes/fits expectation of B. – It is conventional to honor soldiers with a cemetery dedicated to preserving their remains, but it is patriotic to honor them by carrying out the mission they died pursuing. (Lincoln in “The Gettysburg Address”) Cause/Effect: A is/isn’t the cause of B. – A student’s motivation, not his/her intelligence, is more connected to his/her success in school. Proposal: A will/will not alter B. – Given what we have found about the inconclusiveness of studies, the money and effort currently being spent on raising students’ self-esteem is unlikely to actually improve their performance in school or their success in life and may, in fact, be preventing or limiting the pursuit of initiatives that have proven positive effects. (Baumeister et al in Exploding the Self-Esteem Myth)

Read through the speech by Obama beginning on page 67. As you read, highlight his central claim, his supporting claims, and any counterclaims (mark with a CC). Put a * next to any statement that identifies or shows you the intended audience.

After reading What type of argument is it? How do you know? Who is the intended audience? How do you know? Now evaluate the evidence- Describe the emotional and logical appeals Obama made in his speech. How did the emotional appeals strengthen his argument? How did his logical appeals strengthen his argument?

For tomorrow Bring in or have in google, a list of resources and the research you’ve done.
