Academic Dean’s Office (ADO) SUMMER SCHOOL 2014 SUMMER ACTIVATION (Feb 20 – July 5)

Summer school allows you to fast-track your degree make up a failed/withdrawn course take a pre-requisite for a course you will need next year, or for a module you want to get into (e.g.: you could take Math 1229A and 1225B in order to meet part of the admission requirement to get into an Economics Major) push ahead with a part-time degree reduce next year’s course load

I’m interested in Summer school – what should I do? Go to the UWO Summer Calendar online ( and read it thoroughly to familiarize yourself with Summer timelines and course availability.

Summer activation: see P. 14 of the Summer Calendar Activate yourself online (go to to My Possibilities; select Summer Activation) Web page for Summer activation is open Feb 20 - July 15, 2014 You will need to wait 72 hours AFTER activating BEFORE you can register for courses online

Summer sessions There are 4 sessions: Distance Studies (primarily online) (May 5- July 25) Summer Evening (May 5-July 25) Intersession (May 12-June 20) Summer Day (July 7-August 15) Registration for the first sessions begins on March 4th. (Look up exact start and end dates and exam dates for each session in the Summer Calendar, page 18 onwards.)

Before you register, do some planning: Do you have the prerequisite/s for the course you want? (Read the course description in the Summer Calendar) Will it fit into your timetable? (Plan on doing at least 2-3 hours of work for every hour you spend in class—summer courses are compressed!) Will the course be useful to you? Look up your program checklist and general degree requirements. See: King’s Degree Information and Degree Check 101Degree InformationDegree Check 101

Course registration To register for the course, go to student.uwo.ca, and choose Enrolment from the top left-hand corner menu. Choose Add Classes. Always go back to View Academic Record to make sure that the course appears on it. student.uwo.ca Pay for your courses on time! If you need to know about OSAP or other funding, contact Student Financial Services.Student Financial Services *Have you completed your Fall/Winter Intent to Register?

Summer school notes residency requirements don’t apply register as early as possible; some courses fill up very quickly! course load: maximum of 3.0 courses (no more than 2.0 concurrently; no more than 1.0 by Distance) Drop deadlines come up quite soon after Add deadlines: note financial implications!

Can I take courses away from King’s during the Summer? UWO Distance courses require you to write your exams at specific exam centres. If you want to take classes at another University, you can apply for a Letter of Permission (LOP) Read up LOP information on the ADO websiteLOP information Come in to the Academic Dean’s Office to fill out your form; bring printed-off course descriptions or syllabi to have them pre-approved Don’t forget to make sure your transcript gets to UWO when the course has been completed

Summer school advisory Summer courses are condensed and are consequently extremely challenging. Allow for 2-3 hours of reading time for each hour of class time. You will need to manage your time skilfully. It may be harder than you think to combine a summer course with a heavy work schedule.

Is there anything else I should know? 1.Check your academic standing in the summer, whether or not you are taking courses. You need to make sure you meet progression requirements. 2.If you wish to appeal a full-year or second-term course grade or an academic decision from Fall/Winter 2013/14, the appeal procedure must be started before June If you are ready to graduate at the Fall Convocation, apply to do so through student.uwo.ca by the first week of September. student.uwo.ca

What are Progression Requirements? In good standing: 55% or more On probation: 50 – 54% Reqd. to withdraw: below 50% Level 1 progression requirements (at 3.0 courses) In good standing: 60% or more On probation: 55 – 59% Reqd. to withdraw: below 55% Level 2 progression requirements (at 8.0 courses)

Check your s! Make sure you have activated your UWO account through ITS on Main Campus – this is how you will receive important information from the Registrar’s Office and updates about Summer registration as well as Fall/ Winter 2014.
