Emergency Response and Procedures BP Houston Wellness Center

ACSM Health/Fitness Facility Standards  The ACSM has 21 standards with which health/fitness facilities are encouraged to comply  17 of those standards apply to the wellness center (aquatics/saunas/youth does not apply)  Of those 17 we are actively following 14 ACSM – American College of Sports Medicine

What We Need to Address ACSM states, “Facilities must have written policies for emergency response systems and procedures that must be reviewed and rehearsed regularly. These policies must be capable of handling basic first-aid situations and emergency cardiac events.”

What We Need to Address  Need written procedures and policies that are step by step and easy to follow  Need to rehearse this plan with possible scenarios every 3 months or so

WC Procedure (as dictated by the Westlake Campus Emergency Procedures Guide) 1. Call – give your identity, location and details about the incident 2. Hit panic button* and notify W4 security at 7233 (SAFE) – tell them EMS is in route, injured person’s condition and location * Panic button needs to be pushed when responder is closer to the button than a phone (aerobics room, locker rooms, etc)

WC Procedure Continued 4. Render necessary care (First Aid, CPR, AED) 5. Fill out necessary forms (BP/IISN) BP facility, BP equipment, Managed by IISN employees. 6. Contact appropriate parties – Medical, Supervisors, IISN, Injured supervisor, etc.

When Alone at the Wellness Center  WC staff person should be lead responder, responsible for necessary care  Send a bystander to activate EMS system (9-911, SAFE, etc)  If no bystanders, call then security and ask security for help if needed. Render necessary care after calls have been made.
