Lightning Rods

What are they A lightning rod is a device placed at the top of buildings, boats and bridges to absorb the shock of a lightning strike keeping people safe from the oncoming electricity that could endanger some ones life.

Why are they needed in society Lightning rods are very much needed by society because without these electricity from the lightning can be very very dangerous and could easily kill. They also stop the electric current from running into waterways and metal objects.

Benjamin Franklins Kite

The reason of this experiment Franklin wanted to find out whether lightning was electrical or not He did this by attaching an iron key to a silk string and a kite in a thunderstorm Evidence could prove if the key produced sparks when the rope was hit by lightning or if Franklin had attached his Leyden jar that collects energy if the jar is full it means it has collected energy/ electricity.

What did Franklin find and was he hurt? Franklin found out that in fact lightning was electrical and that it can be very dangerous. Franklin was not hurt in the experiment because he was holding a silk ribbon (he was taking shelter in a barn) and only received slight electrical shock from the key as the static electricity jumped from the key to Franklins hand. He found that thunder and lightning clouds are full of static electricity. This is because if the spark from the key to his hand. This deeming his hypothesis correct. Franklin was luck to be alive as other scientists performed the same experiment and were electrocuted Franklin then went on and invented the lightning rod. Which prevented his house from burning down from electrical storms

How to stay safe in a thunderstorm

Averages 5-10 people die by thunderstorms per year in Australia And over 150 are injured. Injuries such as 1 st degree burns damage to vital organs and can result in being paralyzed for life.

Where are you most likely to be struck You are most likely to be struck when at the highest points for example on top of buildings, houses poles and metal objects

What to do in a thunder storm Go in a car A plane (may get bumpy but safe) Wearing rubber boots (stopping electricity) STAY AT HOME!

Electrical Animals

Electrical eels The Electric eel (Electrophorus electricus), an electric fish, and the only species of the genus Electrophorus.

Firefly There are 2,000 species of firefly found in temperate and tropical environments. Many are in marshes or in wet, wooded areas where there larvae have abundant sources of food. Fireflies produce a "cold light", with no infrared or ultraviolet frequencies. The light can be green, yellow or pale red.

Glow Worm Glow worm is the common name for various different groups of insect larvae and adult larviform females which glow through bioluminescence. They glow to impress their females and males in mating season
