Kate has 3 containers of strawberries and there are 18 strawberries in each container. How many strawberries are there in total? 3 X 18 = ? 10 Step 1: Set up the equation with the larger number at the top. 18 x Step 2: Work out 3 X 8 = 24 Put the 4 in the ones column and carry the two tens to the tens column. Do this by writing a 2 above the tens column. 2 tens 4 Step 3: Work out 3 X 10 = 30 (then add the 2 tens you made from the ones.) 3 X 10 = = 50 Write the 5 in the tens column. 5 3 X 18 = 54

Ben had 6 containers with 24 counters in each. How many counters does he have in total? 6 X 24 = ? 10 Step 1: Set up the equation with the larger number at the top. 24 x Step 2: Work out 6 X 4 = 24 Put the 4 in the ones column and carry the two tens to the tens column. Do this by writing a 2 above the tens column tens and 4 Step 3: Work out 6 X 20 Then add the two tens you made from the ones. 1 hundred2 tens Plus the two tens we made from the ones. Now record the 1 in the hundreds column and the 4 tens in the tens column.

There are 8 classes at Forest Park School and 28 students in each class. How many students are there at Forest Park School? 8 X 28 = ? Now let’s try one without materials 28 x Step 1: Set up the equation with the larger number at the top. Step 2: Multiply 8 by the number in the ones column. 8 X 8 = 64. Record the 4 in the ones column and carry the 6 tens to the tens column. Step 3: Multiply 8 by the number in the tens column and add any amount you have carried. 8 X 2 = 16 (remember this is 16 tens). Now add the 6 tens you made from the ones = 22 (remember this is 22 tens or 2 hundreds ad 2 tens) Record the 2 in the tens column and the 2 in the hundreds column.

Use standard written form to work out answers to the questions below. 1) 7 X 26 = ? 2) 6 X 38 = ? 3) 9 X 42 = ? 4) 8 X 83 = ? 5) 3 X 56 = ? Need some more practise?
