Introduction to i>clicker Mini-Workshop for Faculty Eric Chapman Department of Physics August 15, 2008

Basic Use Classroom response system Hardware –USB Base Station –Remote Purchased by students Software –Works with any presentation software or none at all –Open source

How do you vote? Turn on the clicker by pressing the bottom “On/Off” button. A blue “Power” light will appear at the top of the remote.

How do you vote? When I ask a question (and start the timer), select A, B, C, D, or E as your vote.

How do you know your vote was received? Check your “Vote Status” Light: Green light = your vote was sent AND received. Red flashing light = you need to vote again. Not sure you saw the light? Just vote again. Want to change your vote? You can vote again as long as the timer is still going.

Registration Registration may be performed –in class –or online Student must know your choice for user id Instructor must sync roster with online database –Student must use the remote at least once in class before web registration will sync –Timing of registration is insignificant as points are linked to the remote number

Potential Issues Frequency –All base stations use a default frequency of AA –Frequency of a station may be set to any combination of A, B, C, D as a set of 2 characters AA, AB, AC, AD, BB, BA, BC… –If interference is a problem with adjacent base stations, students must change the frequency of their remote every class –Testing is required

Frequency Changing Frequency For Base Station –Change in Settings and Preferences For Student Remotes: At the beginning of each class: –Hold On/Off button for 2 seconds (the blue Power Light will flash) –Enter [frequency] The “Vote Status” light will turn green after you’ve entered this new frequency.
