A brief overview…

“The Obama Administration is committed to the proposition that citizens deserve easy access to the results of scientific research their tax dollars have paid for. That’s why, in a policy memorandum released today, OSTP Director John Holdren has directed Federal agencies with more than $100M in R&D expenditures to develop plans to make the published results of federally funded research freely available to the public within one year of publication and requiring researchers to better account for and manage the digital data resulting from federally funded scientific research.” February 22nd access-results-federally-funded-research

The foundation will require that data underlying the published research results be immediately accessible and open. This too is subject to the transition period and a 12-month embargo may be applied. So… why figshare? Why an RDS? Researchers Who are my researchers collaborating with? How do we comply with funder and gov’t mandates? How do we control the research outputs of our institution and educate users on open data? Faculty, PIs, Librarians Administration Research integrity (transparency, reuse, #open) Legislative change, regulatory compliance, and funder data policies Promote your research and raise your profile How much data are we, as an institution, generating? Where is the data and what’s happened to old data? Benchmarking! How does our research compare to similar institutions?

With figshare for Institutions, figshare’s landing pages get an upgrade We’re putting the data first. The collaboration tools and Project spaces you’re used to with new fields for funder data and grant information, Collections, customized metadata fields, embargo periods, branded DOIs, and more are on the way!
