Flanders Needed to go International / Global and to higher Value added industries.  Flag strategy: encourage our (young) Industries to step into aeronautics:  Go for the High(-er) Added value (mostly “High Tech…”) in aerospace.  Learn about International QA processes and standards Flanders Needed to go International / Global and to higher Value added industries.  Flag strategy: encourage our (young) Industries to step into aeronautics:  Go for the High(-er) Added value (mostly “High Tech…”) in aerospace.  Learn about International QA processes and standards Why was the DIRV action (80’s) needed ? 3 of 15Flag-Italian Mission–nov-2013-V1

Flag creator’s “vision”: “we do not want/need to build planes, but have parts in every plane”. V I S I O N 4 of 15Flag-Italian Mission–nov-2013-V1

Startegie 80’s The FLAG basics : o Involve as many companies as possible in aerospace, by being present in All important planes built, with a lot of (even small) parts, and including our Specialized Small and Medium Enterprises. NOT our Strategy: o have few, large companies, building planes or large parts of them 5 of 15Flag-Italian Mission–nov-2013-V1

Startegie 80’s o Use “Return” for government (example: defense) procurement to allow Flemish companies to penetrate in new markets. o Have a fair share of the Belgian participation (NRC & Business) in International programs, like Airbus. o Increase the share in Space Programs 6 of 15Flag-Italian Mission–nov-2013-V1

F L AG MEMBERS - +/- 50 (2013) o Dimensions. From Large companies (more than people) to Small Businesses o Status of our members: From World Leaders to Innovative Start-ups o Where in the life time of the program? From know–how in Concept, Design capacities, to Manufacturing, Users of planes, Maintenance, Services. o R&D Ute 20+% of sales. o Aircraft? 1 (ULM) aircraft designer & manufacturer(again…): Lambert Aircraft (Wevelgem). 7 of 15Flag-Italian Mission–nov-2013-V1

STRATEGY of FLAG o Motivate Companies and Governments to increase our share in the growing World Aeronautics market. o Increase our understanding and participation in European programs. Find partners, worldwide. o Adapt Government funding (Federal and Regional) to the new opportunities and challenges:  Be present EARLY in new technology programs  Get funding, despite less guaranties of selection  Attention for SME’s specific funding needs 11 of 15Flag-Italian Mission–nov-2013-V1

TASKS of FLAG o Go global:  Be known by new aerospace players, not only TIER 1’s, worldwide.  Improve our “Visibility” in the surrounding European countries. o Our Strong Points:  Technical skills of labor force;  We are a nice market oriented industry, allowing cooperation's for limited, but complex tasks.  High efficiency reduces the total cost of the job done;  Personnel and management, likes and is used to work in international environment;  Nearby European and Nato headquarters;  Easy connections to most countries; 12 of 15Flag-Italian Mission–nov-2013-V1

SUGGESTIONS….  Come back and build a network. Understand our “business values”. We are good…  Be clear regarding your long(er) term policies, needs. Flemish managers will not step in vague PPT projects…  Don’t waste time to tell us:  How difficult the business is  We have to be very competitive  We must be risk sharing  We have to invest in processes, technology, people, QA, etc etc;  Come back and build a network.
