Vacuum Workshop on Vacuum Systems for Synchrotron Light Sources, Barcelona, Installation and vacuum conditioning, 12 th and 13 th September 2005 L. Schulz Introduction Vacuum sections assembly Vacuum conditioning Installation in the storage ring Installation and Vacuum Conditioning

Vacuum Workshop on Vacuum Systems for Synchrotron Light Sources, Barcelona, Installation and vacuum conditioning, 12 th and 13 th September 2005 L. Schulz For the assembly of storage ring vacuum chambers a dust free environment is required Assembly, pump down of vacuum sections in a clean room Vacuum Sections Assembly

Vacuum Workshop on Vacuum Systems for Synchrotron Light Sources, Barcelona, Installation and vacuum conditioning, 12 th and 13 th September 2005 L. Schulz Vacuum Conditioning A classical in-situ bake-out system consists of resistive heaters and thermal insulation. Larger magnet gaps are required. High costs for in-situ bake-out system and magnets. Improvements mostly in the start up phase of a light source. Special pre-bake system at SLS, CLS, Diamond, and ASP. In-Situ Bake-Out or Pre-Bake? Vacuum chamber heater and thermal insulation

Vacuum Workshop on Vacuum Systems for Synchrotron Light Sources, Barcelona, Installation and vacuum conditioning, 12 th and 13 th September 2005 L. Schulz Vacuum Conditioning Bake-out of vacuum sections at 250 °C in an oven. During the bake-out, the vacuum sections in the oven hang on chains so that the thermal expansion can take place freely. Sputter ion pumps started during cool down at 150 °C. SLS Bake-Out Oven

Vacuum Workshop on Vacuum Systems for Synchrotron Light Sources, Barcelona, Installation and vacuum conditioning, 12 th and 13 th September 2005 L. Schulz Vacuum Conditioning ASP Bake-Out Oven

Vacuum Workshop on Vacuum Systems for Synchrotron Light Sources, Barcelona, Installation and vacuum conditioning, 12 th and 13 th September 2005 L. Schulz Installation in the storage ring After bake-out transport and installation of vacuum sections under vacuum into the storage ring tunnel Installation of pre-assembled straight sections in the tunnel with in situ bake- out At Diamond the vacuum chambers are vented with dry nitrogen to make the vacuum connection and pump down

Vacuum Workshop on Vacuum Systems for Synchrotron Light Sources, Barcelona, Installation and vacuum conditioning, 12 th and 13 th September 2005 L. Schulz Installation in the storage ring Final conditioning of the vacuum system with beam At SLS a total beam dose of 100 Ah was required to achieve the design beam lifetime of 10 hours at 400 mA
