CAN CHALLENGE It’s time for the…

In this activity, you will use your (now vast) knowledge of thermal conduction and insulation to construct an insulating case for a standard 355 mL soda can. The soda can will be placed in the insulator that is already mostly immersed in ice water. It will then be filled with 100mL boiling water and a thermometer will be inserted. When the temperature reaches 70 ⁰ C, the insulator will be closed and a stopwatch will be used to time it for 20 minutes. 355 mL INSULATOR beaker

Before you start squealing with joy… some RULES

Your insulating container may not be more than 10 cm x 10 cm x 20 cm. We will measure it to make sure that it is up to specification

You may not use any outside sources to heat the water once it is in the can!

You will work in pairs that are personally engineered by yours truly. This is for your benefit, trust me.

You must name your contraption. It can be any name as long as it’s appropriate. And you all know what that means.

You may not use something that is already designed to insulate a soda can. Exercise your genius, not your ability to copy someone else’s.

The bottom 4/5s of your insulating container should be water proof.

Assessment Project is worth 150 points Three parts: – Group: Documentation of design (40 points) Should be electronic (i.e. photo story, video, podcast, ComicLife comicstrip, scanned color illustrations) Should include a description of design materials and methods used. – The insulator itself (Can Challenge on 1/27) (10 points) – Group Lab Report (75 points) On our class wiki Includes: introduction, question & hypothesis, materials & procedure, data, analysis & conclusions. – Participation (25 points) (pull your own weight in the group)

Today’s Goal Remember that you are documenting your design and construction, so be sure to have a plan for how you will do it before you begin designing. Think carefully about the types of materials that will insulate the can well. Think INSIDE the box. 10 cm x 10 cm x 20 cm is not very big, work within that schematic. Plan any weekend work you might do.
