Analysis Modules F. Hahn

Goal of todays Meeting Inform about current status and layouts of the analysis modules. (the focus will be on common modules) Look specifically into the needs for O 2 and H 2 O analyzers in order to prepare a tender for the instruments. and also… Start the discussion for the other analysis modules.

Content of Talk Introduction Analysis Module Overview and needs for O 2 and H 2 O analysis –ATLAS –CMS –LHCb –ALICE Analyzer Choices / Tender Next Steps

Information What is presented here are (mostly) proposals, they don’t represent approved designs. The resources (components and manpower) required to make these modules are (mostly) not in the scope of the current work packages. In the beginning analysis instruments can be used manually. Fully equipped and automatic analysis modules can be ready for 2 nd year of LHC operation.

Overview Two Types of Analysis Modules –Common Analysis Modules for O 2, H 2 O, IR analysis. Receive gas from several sub-detectors, the control is done in the PLC for “Auxiliary Gas” –Detector Specific Analysis Modules for O 2, H 2 O, or Monitor chambers. Receive gas from one single sub-detectors. The control is done in the PLC of that sub-detector. Note: Analysers that are driven or controlled through the gas system plc, should be defined now so that there existence can be foreseen in the program. Stand alone analysers (e.g. GC’s) can be added later provided space and hardware connections have been foreseen.

Analyser Choices and Tender

Proposed Firms Oxygen Analyzers: AmetecAMSOrbispherePanametricsTeledyneHygrometers: Ametec Edgetec (G+M) Shaw Xentaur / MCM

O 2 Analyzers Technologies Electro-chemical: –Can be compatible with all mixtures, but may be not all companies have the same degree of “savoir faire”. –Fuel cells have limited lifetime (~ 1 year) –Can be sensitive to pollution in the gas –Special cells for CO2 (not all suppliers have them) –Cheap (5kCHF) transmitter type sensors exist (not really appropriate for remote scanning systems) –Sophisticated Instruments (> 8 kCHF) have: automatic ranging (usually required for multi channel systems) automatic calibration (required for high precision measurements) Zirconium oxide: –They cannot measure O 2 in gas mixtures containing hydrocarbons. –Longer lifetime than fuel cells –More reliable measurement –Usually more expensive than fuel cell technology Other technologies, e.g. paramagnetic, etc. exist, but they are not so universally useable.

H 2 O Analysers Technologies 1.Capacitive: –Relatively inexpensive transmitter type sensors –Can be Atex certified –Good in low range, not so reliable > 1’000 ppm –Can be destroyed by acids present in the gas 2.Wet mirror: + Much more reliable + Longer lifetime –Higher price –Not all instruments can measure low range –Usually not ATEX certified

Tender for O 2 and H 2 O Analysers Experiments should confirm quantity and provide specs for each analyser. The Tender can take into account for each individual analyser. We will keep the option to split the contract into several smaller orders.

Calendar for Tender Partial or full Approval of layouts and funds for analysis modules by the experiments. Draft technical specification (with individual requirements for each sensor). Approval of technical spec. 30 th of June 2006 Sent out tender (Target date 7 th of July 2006) Place analyser order September 2006.
