Conditional Statements Conditional - Conditionals are formed by joining two statements with the words if and then: If p, then q. The if-statement is the hypothesis and the then-statement is the conclusion. Conditional statements are either true conditionals or false conditionals. A conditional is a false conditional when the hypothesis is true and the conclusion is false. A conditional can be shown to be false by using a counterexample.

Identify the hypothesis and conclusion of each statement. a. If you are a baby, then you will cry. b. To find the distance between two points, you can use the Distance Formula. Answer: Hypothesis: you are a baby Conclusion: you will cry Answer: Hypothesis: you want to find the distance between two points Conclusion: you can use the Distance Formula Example 3-1c

Conditionals, Converses, etc Conditional - If p, then q. Converse - If q, then p. Inverse – If not p, then not q. Contrapositive – If not q, then not p. Counterexample – If p, then not q. Rules of Logic: The truth value of a converse may or may not be the same as that of its conditional. The truth value of a conditional and its contrapositive are always the same. Likewise for a converse and an inverse.

Write the converse, inverse, and contrapositive of the statement The sum of the measures of two complementary angles is 90. Determine whether each statement is true or false. If a statement is false, give a counterexample. Answer: Conditional: If two angles are complementary, then the sum of their measures is 90; true. Converse: If the sum of the measures of two angles is 90, then they are complementary; true. Inverse: If two angles are not complementary, then the sum of their measures is not 90; true. Contrapositive: If the sum of the measures of two angles is not 90, then they are not complementary; true. Example 3-4b
