1.Enter the classroom silently and find your seat. 2.Take out your HAWK card, agenda, 2 pencils, and any late homework 3.Put backpack away against the BACK wall 4.Write down homework in your agenda. (Finish entire guided notes packet)(45 sec) 5.Stack planners at the front of your table group 6.Place any late homework on top of the planners 7.Do Now (5 min) 8.Wait silently for instructions 7 min AGENDA DO NOW: Four Square Do Now Objective(s): SWBAT write a testable hypothesis that answers an investigation’s question. SWBAT write a detailed materials list and procedure for a scientific investigation. Thursday, August 27 Learner Profile: Communicators

Quiz – 5 minutes Write your FULL NAME, pod, and date at the top Answer all 5 questions about variables. When finished, turn over You may draw, write a poem, tell me a story, etc. No talking!

Quiz – 5 minutes Trade quizzes so that no one has their own quiz Write your FULL NAME at the bottom If the answer is correct, DO NOTHING If the answer is incorrect, circle the correct answer and put an X through the number At the end, only write the number they missed at the top (-0, -1, etc) 1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D 5.A

Statement of Inquiry/IB Trait STATEMENT OF INQUIRY: Humans explore the relationships among interacting variables and use evidence to impact communities and find functional solutions using scientific and technological advances. IB TRAIT: COMMUNICATORS

I.Do Now II.Hypotheses III.Guided Practice IV.Independent Practice V.Materials and Procedures VI.Guided Practice VII.Independent Practice VIII.Exit Ticket IX.Closing and Questions Hypothesis, Materials, Procedure inquiry value “ A subtle thought that is in error may yet give rise to fruitful inquiry that can establish truths of great value.” – Isaac Asimov

Scientific Method Scientific Method The steps of the Scientific Method are: 1.Asking a question 2.Performing background research 3.Forming a hypothesis 4.Testing the hypothesis 5.Analyzing data and drawing conclusions 6. Communicating results

Hypotheses After scientists ask a scientific question, they must make an educated guess about what they think is going to happen. hypothesis This is called a hypothesis.

Hypotheses hypothesis A hypothesis is an educated guess. It is educated because scientists have performed background research and used their prior knowledge to come up with it.

Hypotheses 3 Criteria for a good hypothesis 1.Must be a complete sentence that provides a possible answer to a scientific question. 2.Must be testable. 3.Must show a relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable.

Hypotheses If, then… Hypotheses are written as an if, then statement. The structure is, – If independent variable, then dependent variable.

Example Scientific Question: Does drinking soda make you run slower? Background Research: What do we know about drinking soda and dehydration from personal experience?

Example Scientific Question: Does drinking soda make you run slower?Hypothesis: If ____________________________________, then ___________________________________. What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable?

Guided Practice Complete the worksheet in your guided notes with your table group at a voice level 1. In this worksheet, you will put together all the parts of the scientific method that you have learned so far including the scientific question and the hypothesis. 15 min

Independent Practice Using the Popcorn Article and the scientific question and variables you have written, write a testable hypothesis that answers your scientific question. This should be what you think will happen when you perform the experiment and should be written as an if, then statement. 10 min

Imagine you are cooking a meal. How do you know what goes into it? How do you know the steps you need to take to make it? Turn and Talk

Materials & Procedure recipe In an experiment, the materials and procedure section is like the recipe. They both let others know exactly what items are needed to conduct the experiment, and the steps that need to be taken. As with any recipe, we need to be detailed and precise because other scientists will want to perform this lab in the future.

Materials Materials are items used during an experiment. exactly The materials section tells scientists exactly what is needed to perform this experiment. It is written as a bullet point list. – This is a bullet point list! Be specific!

Procedure 1.A procedure is list of steps explaining exactly what you did in an experiment. exactly 2.Scientists should be able to perform the experiment exactly the way that you did. 3.Written as a numbered list. 4.Be specific!

Why is it important for scientists to write specific materials and procedure lists for their experiments? Turn and Talk

Practice SCIENTIFIC QUESTION: Does drinking soda make you run slower? HYPOTHESIS: If you drink soda, then you will run slower. MATERIALS: 3 2L bottles of room temperature soda – Mountain Dew – Coke – Fanta Orange 1 pair Nike shoes, size 7 2L bottle of room temperature Fiji water 12 year old girl Stopwatch PROCEDURE: 1.Have girl drink 0.5 L of water 2.Have girl run 500m and time how long it takes 3.Record results 4.Repeat steps 1-3 three more times 5.Repeat steps 1-3 four times for each type of soda

Guided Practice Use the scenario and scientific investigation in your guided notes and work with your table group to complete the scientific method. Raise your hands if you have any questions! 12 min

Independent Practice Using the Popcorn Article and your scientific investigation, write a detailed materials and procedure list for your experiment. You are not actually performing this experiment so you can have any materials you think are necessary to perform it – think big! Raise your hand to have me check your work when you are finished. 12 min

Complete the exit ticket silently and stack at your table group when you are finished. Exit Ticket 5 min
