Applications by the Numbers In , >80 EES related faculty advertisements 42 of 50 US States 3 countries: Singapore, Norway, Canada Private, Public, R1, R2, R3, PUIs … applicants per position 8-15 … applicants for telephone interview 2-5 … applicants for onsite visit 0-1 … applicant offered position

David Ladner - Brief History PhD 2009, University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign Postdoc, Arizona State University – August 2009 to July 2010 Assistant Professor, Clemson University – August 2010 to present

Ladner search process Applied to 15 schools Two and a half (and a canceled) interview trips – Three phone interviews Two offers One job

Interesting Notes / Lessons Learned The two schools where I interviewed were places where I had previous face-to-face interaction with the chair. I was not the first choice at either of the schools from whom offers were received. I should have prepared better for phone interviews. I should have been more interested (truly interested) in others’ work.

Shelie Miller - Brief History PhD University of Illinois at Chicago, 2006 Assistant Professor, Clemson University – Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences – Assistant Professor, University of Michigan – School of Natural Resources and Environment – 2010-present

Thoughts Take advantage of opportunities during PhD – Writing, teaching, leadership Consider “fit” when applying for jobs Consider who you’re talking to on interviews – Junior, mid-career, senior
