Hades Greek name: Hades Roman name: Dis or Pluto Parents: Konos and Rhea Sphere of influence: the Underworld Attributes: Cerberus (his 3 headed dog), the key to the Underworld, and sometimes a cornucopia or a two-pronged pick-axe Birthplace: Island of Crete (same as Zeus)

Hades Pre 476 A.D. I chose this picture of Hades because it shows him on his throne, which gives you the impression that he is powerful. Hades is the king of the Underworld and the god of death and the dead. He is basically the opposite of Zeus, but they are similar in their looks. They both are always shown with curly hair and a beard. They are also always painted or sculpted as very strong and powerful. This picture spoke to me because of his relaxed demeanor. It is almost as if he has conquered all that he wants and knows he is above others. I might even go as far as to say he looks arrogant, as if he is the best.

Hades “Modern Art” Post-1400 A.D. I chose this drawing of Hades because It shows him with one of his least common attributes: his two-pronged pick-axe. It also gave me the feeling of doom and darkness. I think I received that feeling because he is wearing all black, the background is dark, mysterious, and somewhat creepy. So even if I didn’t know that this was Hades, he would be my first guess because of my thoughts as I was letting the picture sink in. So in my opinion the artist did a very good job of giving him that dark feeling, after all he is the god of the Underworld, death, and the dead.
