Electricity OA3.1 Understandin g electricity and magnetism

Electricity Warm Up 1.An atom lost an electron. It now has a ________ charge. 2.An atom gained an electron. It now has a ___________ charge.

Vocab word A material that electricity travels through easily 1. Electrical conductor Definition Picture Examples: Metals, water, your body!

Vocab word A material that electricity does NOT travel through easily 2. Electrical insulator Definition Picture Examples: plastics, wood, glass, and rubber

Insulator Utility Pole with insulators

Vocab word Changes chemical energy into electrical energy 3. Battery Definition Picture Stores up (potential energy) the chemical energy

There are 2 kinds of batteries: Dry Cell and Wet Cell batteries This is a dry cell. The zinc container of the dry cell contains a moist chemical paste surrounding a carbon rod suspended in the middle. Most batteries you will find at home: used for flashlights, smoke alarms, kids toys are DRY CELL Batteries.

dry cell Batteries:. A chemical reaction between the metal case and the paste inside causes electrons to build up on the metal, making it negative. The rod in the middle becomes positive. Current flows when the two poles are connected.

Wet cell batteries are most commonly associated with automobile batteries. A wet cell contains two metal plates made in an acid. Chemical reactions between the plates and the acid cause electrons to build up at the negative pole. When the poles are connected, electrons flow.

Vocab word Steady flow of electricity 4. Electrical current Definition Picture Will move in a wire along a path or circuit.

Remember static electricity? Static electricity doesn’t move until it discharges! Its different than an electrical current! The flow of electricity in current electricity has electrical pressure or voltage. Electric charges flow from an area of high voltage to an area of low voltage.

Vocab word A machine that changes some other kind of energy into electrical energy 5. Generator Definition Picture Sometimes, people have generators hooked up to their houses just in case they lose electricity

Closure questions : True or False? 1.Metals are good examples of conductors. 2.Electricity travels easily through an insulator. 3.Static electricity is what helps a balloon stay “stuck” on a wall. 4.In electricity, opposites attract. 5.People use generators to create solar power.
