Presentation transcript:

Matthew explicitly says that our purpose in life is to Go and Make Disciples (Matthew 28:20b). John implicitly writes it as Go and Bear Fruit (John 15:16). Matthew gives us Jesus’ promise that assures his presence for our mission. John gives us Jesus’ command that unlocks the power for our mission (John 15:4).

Our Lord’s presence and power are conditioned, however, in our “abiding” in him. We must remain in him if we expect to live vital and productive lives.

Remain in His PERSON (vv. 1-6)

The Assumption: The Assumption: That I believe that Jesus Christ of Nazareth is God’s Son (I John 4:15) and that I have received him as my personal Savior and Lord (John 1:12). 1.Remain in his person (vv. 1-6).

The Expectation: The Expectation: That I constantly draw my energy from Jesus knowing that total dependence on him is the key to vitality and productivity (Luke 5:15- 16; John 15:4-5). 1.Remain in his person (vv. 1-6).

The Application: The Application: Worship Him! 1.Remain in his person (vv. 1-6). The Evidence: The Evidence: I will bear fruit (v. 2) I will experience pruning (v. 2)

Remain in His WORD (vv. 7-8)

The Assumption: The Assumption: That I believe that the Bible is the Word of God written without error as our only sure source of knowledge about God and His plans and as our absolute guide for doctrinal teaching and godly living (II Timothy 3:16-17; II Peter 1:20-21). 2.Remain in his word (vv. 7-8).

The Expectation: The Expectation: That I allow the Holy Spirit to teach and remind me (John 14:26) as I diligently study, memorize and meditate on God’s Word day and night (Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:2; 119:9-16; John 15:7-8). 2.Remain in his word (vv. 7-8).

The Application: The Application: Listen to Him! 2.Remain in his word (vv. 7-8). The Evidence: The Evidence: My prayers will be answered (v. 7) [He will listen to me.]

Remain in His LOVE (vv. 9-17)

The Assumption: The Assumption: That I believe that Jesus loves me so much…so much more than I can imagine that he trusts and treats me as a friend (John 15:14-15) ; and that my love for him is always a response to his love for me (I John 4:19). 3.Remain in his love (vv. 9-17).

The Expectation: The Expectation: That I surrender my life to Jesus in complete obedience and loyalty to his Lordship (John 14:21; 15:9-10; I John 3:24) and that I relate in love to the community of believers –His body (John 15:12). 3.Remain in his love (vv. 9-17).

The Application: The Application: Serve Him! 3.Remain in his love (vv. 9-17). The Evidence: The Evidence: I will have a deepening love for Christ and for others (vv. 9, 12-13) I will experience joy (v. 2)
