Make Your Day

1.Do we need rules in our classroom? 2.What would our school or community be like without rules? 3. How do “rules” help? Objective: We will create a school-wide rule that will help us make good choices, accept responsibility, and create a safe school.

Now that you have a list of rules, can you put the rules into three groups or categories? How about these? LearningSafetyWell-being

Did your list look like this one? No yelling No running No talking out of turn No talking in line No standing on chairs No punching No pushing No pinching No pulling No bothering No laughing No throwing sand No stealing No getting up from the carpet No teasing No throwing things on the floor No throwing things at people No lying Learning Well-beingSafety

Estrella Vista has only one rule: No has one right the to with interfere others. the safety learning, and of well-being

No has the right to interfere with the learning, safety and well-being of others. Students Family Cafeteria Workers Secretary FriendsAll Teachers Strangers one

What does no one mean: No one has the right to interfere with the learning, safety and well-being of others.

What does interfere mean? No one has the right to interfere Interfere means: stop, cut in, break in

Child is bossy with friends. 3. Child cheats in playing with friends. 2. Child spends allowance foolishly. The next day they will have to face the teacher and peers. There is no money for the newly released video game Friends will start to stay away.

Question: Would a teacher whispering to a student privately and then giving the student time to think about his/her choice (action) be a punishment or consequence? At Estrella Vista all punishments are gone. We use the Make Your Day Citizenship Program. With Make Your Day when a student interferes with the learning, safety or well-being of another student he/she is allowed to think about their choice. This is called going to Step. Make Your Day Steps

STEP 1 Away from others in a chair STEP 2 Away from others standing STEP 3 Away from others reading rule standing STEP 4 Call home Parents Come STEP 5 Office No one has the right to interfere with the learning, safety and well-being of others. Make Your Day **RECOURSE**

Make Your Day Points Now let’s talk about an important part of Make Your Day which is how do you make your day.

Points Each student has the ability to make their day. In order to make your day you need to earn points. Earning Points 1.You begin earning points the moment you leave the house in the morning. 2.You earn points every time you do what is expected. 3.You earn points every time you try your best. I’m Making My Day!

During Points you will decide if you are tattling or if you have a concern Tattling-Tale vs Concern Tattling Tattling: telling a parent, teacher, etc., about something bad or wrong that another child has done so that the child gets punished Many times a student tattles because he/she wants to hurt the other student. Tattling is a threat to a person’s well-being. Concern Concern: when a person is genuinely worried about a friend’s learning, safety or well-being. When you are concerned about a friend or student you talk to that person in a kind way in order to find a way to help.

Points Practice Voicing Concerns It is important to practice voicing concerns. Here is an example of how to state a concern. “It interfered with my (learning/safety/well-being) when you ______________and I asked you to stop. Response: “Accept” or “Don’t Accept”. If the student does not accept then we “split the difference” in points
