Learners achieving their potential: School leadership teams & performance athletes: a journey to 2012 and beyond

Why are we here? Share WHS’s PE journey so far; PE’s whole school impact and the vision for the future and ‘Every Child Matters, Every Person Matters, Every Thing Matters’ ‘Everyone is of equal value’ OFSTED April 2011: ‘Sports Specialism makes an outstanding contribution’

Sparks… 30 circles – creativity & divergent thinking You have 90 seconds to sketch as many things incorporating the circle into the design Peer sketch You have 60 seconds to sketch the face of the person next to you!

WHS PE: Good to Great Journey The Flywheel Effect No single event; it is an accumulative effect over time Small, continuous changes over time = big, positive changes Environment Culture Expectation

‘Good artists copy, great artists steal’ As school leaders, what have you / what can you put in place to allow your PE team to become an exceptional and innovative department that has a whole school impact? Chance to share good practice in our schools & share new ideas you would like to implement in the future Use Post It notes to stick on ‘collaboration’ boards around the room Please take pictures / note down any ideas you would like to steal OFSTED April 2011: ‘Looking outward school: learning from others’

WHS’s Flywheel Highlights Specialist Sports College status 2003 Development of first class facilities High quality Sports ‘Xtra’ opportunities One to one LSA support Active 1 club for SEN students Sports Leadership team, KS3 – KS5 Sports Captains Sports Personality of the Year Awards National award winning ‘High Performance’ magazine Sports Journalism opportunities ‘Innovation Day’ 2012 (Google 20% time)

Key to PE WHS… 1. ‘Hire good people and get out of their way’ Committed staff who go above & beyond on a daily basis 2. 'Where participation, competition and excellence in PE and sport are equally valued by all stakeholders'

WHS PE: Personalising Pathways ‘Bring on the learning revolution!’ revolution.html iPhone document: This is a process, NOT a product Organic / Michelin * / agricultural model Constantly tweaking & changing dependent upon the ‘conditions’

WHS Leadership team have… Promoted autonomy & ownership of our school’s PE curriculum Have allowed us to be architects of our own locally owned, flexible and high quality curriculum that is continually reviewed, monitored and manipulated to suit the individual needs of the students Combine this with the best bits of NC WE know what is best for our students…..

iPhone document….. Sharing good WHS and the WHS? OFSTED April 2011: ‘It is seen to be cool to be involved and be excellent in sport’

What 3 things could you implement in your school’s PE team this year / next year / 5 years time to improve whole school performance? Tattoo Review = on your hand...what 1 word will you take away with you from the workshop?

Contact Education, PE and Sport Blog:

Bright Spot Senior Management appointed position of Olympic Co-ordinator Started in 2010 – to maximise the impact the London 2012 games could have on our students During NSSW 2010 we had one whole day dedicated to learning about the Olympic & Paralympic values within all subjects Bigger and better in 2011 The event was ran by a group of year 9 students – Lead by and for the students

Main target was to increase student’s awareness of London 2012, opportunities to become involved, but more importantly the values the games behold It was cross-curricular, inclusive and student driven Ran by the PE team and ‘Sporty’ students’, but to involve every student and teacher alike Assemblies ran by Ex- Olympians and current Paralympians A whole range of resources created by individual subjects, linking with one or more of the Olympic values Wilmslow Olympic Day

gd fd Lasting Legacy This year it’s ‘Wilmslow Olympic Week’ A non-timetabled week dedicated to Student Identity, linking NSSW with maximising student talent and identity The whole week will be linked to the Olympic values and how students can base their lives around these values Create a lasting legacy of what the Olympics represent past 2012

School Games & Partnership School Leadership model – subject ambassadors We have maintained our SSCo for 2 full days – strong ties with our feeder primary schools We also have in place a School Games Co-ordinator based in school to integrate Level 1 and 2 We still integrate fully with the Macclesfield School Sports Partnership
